The new witness voting system 🗳️ What many Blurtarians don't know...

in witness •  2 years ago  (edited)

I just had a conversation with our Blurt Queen @ultravioletmag about witness votes, so let us just take her account to explain the witness voting system again to everybody! (I hope she doesn't mind...?) 😜

Ultra-v has about 90K BlurtPower in her account and she has voted for 18 witnesses...

In our new system, that means you have to take the 90K Blurtpower and divide it up amongst the 18 witnesses. That leaves 5K VotingPower for each witness.

If Ultra-v were to vote for less witnesses (for example only 3), her 90K BlurtPower would only need to be divided up between these 3 witnesses, now giving each witness 30K VotingPower!!!!

If you have questions about the voting system, don't hesitate to comment!!!

If you like what you read, please vote for my witness! 🗳️ It would be much appreciated! I can use every single vote, I can get:

This is perfectly understandable, dear brother, but...
Where is the benefit? What does this do? Because while it is true that we can vote for 30 witnesses, it is better to vote for those who are doing a good job, even if they are few, than to have 30 witnesses displaying their banner without promoting viable improvements for everyone on the platform.

the old system of witness voting

which is what is currently used on steem and hive

is a system where your vote power is multiplied by 30X

which means, you can vote for 30 witnesses, and they each get your FULL vote power

which means, LARGE ACCOUNTS could potentially force out anyone they didn't like in the top 20

the new system makes this much more difficult

and thus more fair

Yes it’s a good fair system. It’s far better for us to just pick one or two witnesses rly we like I didn’t realise this till now.

Thanks for your answer, my friend.

The method was introduced to dilute the voting power of big accounts, that were voting for 30 witnesses, keeping them all up in the ranks...

I personally find the new system fairer... Mostly because of the votes from the big accounts: initblurt and socialgraph...

Does this mean that the witnesses had only enormous voting power Or were only the closest ones in the top 20?

We should all learn to monitor these tools more maybe you can do weekly info posts :)

On https://ecosynthesizer.com/blurt you can get almost any information out of the blockchain, that you want....

I think the top 10 witness spots are pretty much locked up with insiders.

Posted from https://blurtlatam.com

Not true wtp is 8 now. I think you can make it to number 6 before there is some issues. I think too five are quite closed in. But maybe not in the future

Yes that's true, you're right.

It is good to know about it, but only big account holders are able to command who will go to the top 20.

Posted from https://blurtlatam.com

Defo but over time things can change now would be a good time to buy up if anyone had the ability

Posted from https://blurtlatam.com

So it seems we are all better to pick one or two witnesses we like than spread it thin now it’s actually a great feature

Posted from https://blurtlatam.com

🙏🏻 Thanks you are very good at explaining these thIngs so everyone can get it

Thanks for the information on how the voting works I didn't know it was like this.👍

Das wurde bestimmt so gemacht, weil denen wohl die Düse geht falls die 'falschen' in die Top 20 kommen.

Posted from https://blurtlatam.com

Nee, in der Tat schwächt das ihre Position..

Posted from https://blurtlatam.com

A very good explanation, thank you

You're more than welcome!!! 🙏

Wow if there was one more c time they would collectively dominate

I've been on blockchain a good few years now and still have no clue what witnesses are or what they do. It would be nice if someone could explain it.

A witness runs a so-called witness node (server). This server produces blocks for the Blurt blockchain. Unlike a central database, Blurt is running on a blockchain - That means that everything we all do here is inserted into these blocks, which are being produced by us witnesses.

You can see the blocks being produced live here: https://ecosynthesizer.com/blurt/

This is quite funny actually... My witness node produced the block in which my answer to your question was posted. You can see that here:

Yeh that's what they always say but you might as well be talking double dutch coz I still have no clue what that all means. In my head I get this picture from that description

All you rly need to know is you can vote for people in your ‘vote for witness’ you think would make good decisions for blurt or has the ethos you like. The less people you vote for the More power you give them.

according to the witnesses themselves they HAVE no power, this is why I'm wondering what we are really voting for and why? If this is just about building blocks then where does any ethos or ethics come into it at all??

Posted from https://blurtlatam.com

Supposedly they should be making decisions for changes to the site I always believed anyway and to speak on behalf of the platform concensus to look after peoples needs

Posted from https://blurtlatam.com

yeh that's what I thought but it's not so according to the answers I've got.

Posted from https://blurtlatam.com

I totally could be wrong o know you can earn a few passIve dollars for hosting a witness

Posted from https://blurtlatam.com

Did you click on that link I commented?

Posted from https://blurtlatam.com

Yes, all I see is computer readouts but what I'm asking is what do YOU physically do to make this happen?

Posted from https://blurtlatam.com

A witness doesn't do anything physical... Every witness operates his or her own witness node (server) that helps produce the blocks for the blockchain driving this platform....

Posted from https://blurtlatam.com

  ·  2 years ago  ·   (edited)

so you provide a 'server' then. Is that like a bigger computer or something else. I'm genuinely interested but you are not mansplaining it properly. I may know a lot about my field but I know very little about blockchains and crypto, even things like 'servers'. I thought that was like vodaphone or my server 'pure'.
You just repeated the same thing again "Every witness operates his or her own witness node (server) that helps produce the blocks for the blockchain driving this platform" so the words I don't know anything about are witness, node, server, blocks so repeating all those things still leaves me not understanding any of it.
