Hello everyone, hope you are doing great. Its was a Partical today on curve settings on a Highways.

In the design of roads and railways, straight sections of road or track are connected by curves or varying radius. The purpose of the curve us to deflect a vehicle travelling along one of the straight safely and comfortably through the angle Theta to enable it to continue its journey along the straight. Theta is known as the deflection angle.

Setting out a curve on Highways is the process of establishing the centre-line of the curve on the ground by means of pegs at 10 m to 30 m intervals. In order to do this the tangent and intersection points must first be fixed in the ground, in their correct positions. Highway curve is an arc which connects two straight lines which are separated by some angle called deflection angle. This situation occurs where the alignment of a roadway or railway changes its direction because of unavoidable objects or conditions.They are provided with a maximum speed limit that should be followed very strictly. Following the speed limit becomes essential as the exceed in speed may lead to the chances of the vehicle becoming out of control while negotiating a turn and thus increase the odds of fatal accidents.

SETTING OUT CIRCULAR CURVE. Circular curve may be set out using any of the following method; i. Using Theodolite and tape(i.e deflection angle method) ii. Using Theodolite (2) iii. Using EDM iv. By using coordinates method v. using two tapes vi. Setting out with inaccessible intersection point. We used the Theodolite and tape method to set the curve. Equipment used are; Theodolite, Pegs, Tape measure/measuring wire, Umbrella, Ranging rods, Triangle sets and Cross staff.

lmportant of setting out a curve on a Highways. -Curves on Highway provides easy turning in case of road and track.

-If there is a obstruction in the mid way of the highway such as mountains, Rocks etc.. (which are much in Nigeria.) which are impossible to move so a gradual curvature is provided to move forward towards the destination.

-Highways are generally straight roads for longer lengths so there may be a higher chance of occurring accidents due to overspending, or drowsy driving.

-If the curvature is provided the driver gets conscious and controls his speed and drowsiness while driving.

-Drowsiness is the main cause of accidents on highways, if curve is provided on the highway the driver becomes alert and respond to the curvature

-Gradual change in direction or orientation in the alignment can be made by providing the curves.

-Road curves are provided so as to get comfort to the passengers.
