Funny Stereotypes In My Country (Part 3)

in instablurt •  2 years ago

This comedy rumble is making me rack my brains for more comedy (finding out more funny stereotypes in my country actually 😁) and many more but one thing is sure, I'm having fun with it. If you've missed the other parts of this series, you can check them out - Stereotypes part 1 and Stereotypes part 2

I promised more and I've got more to share, there are still a lot of them so I can't share all in one post but for this post, I have four funny stereotypes to make you laugh and hopefully take you back in time if you're a fellow Nigerian.

The sneeze calls

There was a day in class back in my high school days, we were having a minute of silence for a sad news we heard... Our teach had ordered everyone to stay extra quiet while standing but just when it was going so perfectly, a girl sneezed very loudly and a lot of us were like "Who is calling you?!!!" 😂

Welcome to my country where sneezing means someone is calling you elsewhere. It's funny how we got to believe this because we never could tell if someone was really calling our names.

Sneezing is a sign of catarrh too, right?

But that's if you want to explain it medically which my fellow Nigerians believe isn't just it, you're being summoned somewhere when you sneeze. Some of us would be like "I wonder who is calling me" and a friend of mine sometime ago was like "What have I done again? This sneezing is strong" 😂

I've even seen a movie where they try to call somebody's name in silence to see if they'll sneeze to react to their calls... It never works that way but we Nigerians believe it regardless.

Crossing the legs of a pregnant woman

My pregnant aunt visited sometime ago and she lied down on the floor because she felt hot from the heat outside. While she was lying down, a very popular ugly and stubborn child crossed her legs in a hurry to go on an errand.

Hell broke loss immediately as my pregnant aunt screamed asking the boy to cross her legs back 😂 He did crossed her legs back but she was still worried, why? Here is the funny stereotype to that incident that some others could call random and insignificant.

The baby in the womb will be or look like the person who crossed the pregnant woman's leg.

Now, you can tell why she was still worried 😂 she didn't want a ugly and stubborn kid. I mean the boy that crossed her legs was obviously ugly and his deeds proves very well that he was so stubborn... Don't blame her for being that worried since she believes that stereotype.

Eating the meat last in a meal

I don't know if this is a stereotype though but it is very common among Nigerians, where we eat our meals before we devour the meat served in the meal.

You might want to note that I wasn't brought up like that so I eat meat from beginning till the end of the meal but I've lived with people who does that out of even unconsciousness.

I was eating with a family and before I tried to pick a piece of meat to eat, I noticed no one had taken meat... Dad had already taught me to wait for the elder to take meat before I do (And I wasn't the eldest on that meal table 😒) I decided to wait for them.

The meal got finished before everyone chose their piece of meat from biggest to smallest 😩😂 I was so annoyed inside me but couldn't show it. At least I got to eat meat, so I thought.

Throwing broken tooth to the roof top

Another funny stereotype that I don't know if it's true or not but a lot of Nigerians do it (I think I did it once back then). I still laugh at people who just broke their tooth 😂 they will be looking like a bit of a vampire (am I over exaggerating this? 😬).

Well, the belief that after a tooth is broken, it should be thrown to the rooftop still lives today in my country.

They say, it will allow another tooth grow back...

And then the question I always ask, won't the tooth really grow back without doing that? I'm yet to find that out because I wouldn't want to take the risk of not throwing my tooth and later don't see the tooth growing back... Unimaginable! 😂

So I guess I'm a believer of this stereotype and some others I'll share soon if you would watch out for my future posts.
