I'm working as a carpenter by profession. These days people have restricted constructions due to the economic hardship in Sri Lanka. To tell you the truth, I think it is correct if I said that the construction has been stopped. These days, I am working diligently. As I said before, whenever I got time while working and thought to start a small garden.

Every day I would like to start the day with a beautiful early morning with the sunrise, I leave for work and come back home by the time the sun sets. Some days, even though the sun has set, I have not finished the work. I also work late at night. It is my main responsibility to complete and hand over the contract I took as soon as possible.

Anyhow, every time I had a day off, I looked into the garden. Although there was no big space, I started farming in a small area as much as I could. My daily life plan made every Sunday a day off, but some Sundays I have to work because of the strong demand of the owner to finish the contract as soon as possible. Anyway, in the little time I got, I didn't forget to look into the garden.

Someone willings to take care of my garden while I'm away and take care of the plants. It is my mother whom I love the most. She takes good care of all the work in the garden without any remuneration. Because these days, due to the severe economic crisis in Sri Lanka, the cost of living has become unsustainable and food is very scarce.

I never put chemical fertilizers, various agrochemical liquids, medicines etc. in my garden. A box is always put into it as shown in the picture below. It is known as the living cell of the people of our area. The green waste put in this can be used as organic fertilizer after decaying with time. I mostly add to the plants the organic fertilizer that is formed by decomposing the leaves. I have never paid for chemical fertilizers from chemical fertilizer sellers to make my small garden successful.

Also, I am able to get more than enough manure and chicken manure for free from a dear neighbor's animal farm. Therefore, it is a special fact that I have not spent any money to carry out this gardening. I also suggest you to start a small cultivation in a small space. When you see little plants emerging from the ground, your mind can feel relaxed and happy.

The vegetables needed to make curry for the three main meals a day will cost about 750 rupees. Due to the economic difficulties in Sri Lanka, this is an expense that cannot be afforded by people who are living a middle class life. I save more than 500 rupees a day because the vegetables I get from my garden are green. That amount is 6.94 Steem units. In this way, all our family members contribute a lot to reduce the cost of living in our house.

Vegetables like okra, pumpkin, mackerel, gourd, brinjal, tomato and several delicious and healthy crops like spinach, mukununanna, kathurumurunga have been grown in the garden. Vegetables from the garden are fresher than the stale vegetables available in the market. My mother is also a lucky woman who goes to the garden just before cooking and takes her favorite vegetables and herbs to cook.

The special point is that 500 rupees per day gives a value of 30×500=15000 per month. Therefore, a family can save 15000 rupees per month.
