The Prophet (peace be upon him) fought with a famous wrestler named Rukana. He threw her more than once. In another narration it has been said: The one whom the Prophet (peace be upon him) brought down was very strong. He dusted her three times in a row. On the basis of all these hadiths, the jurists have given the opinion that it is completely permissible to compete in running, men can run in this race together. Men and Muharram girls can compete jointly or husband and wife can compete together. Competing and wrestling in running is not the opposite of dignity, seriousness, knowledge, glory and old age. Because when the Holy Prophet (SAW) ran and competed with Hazrat Ayesha (RA), he was in his fifties.
The game of archery and javelin throwing is also legal. The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) used to encourage his Companions when he saw them shooting arrows. He used to say:
You shoot arrows, I am with you.
In fact, in the eyes of the Prophet (peace be upon him) shooting an arrow was not just a game and a joke. It was a power-acquisition and manifestation of power. Allaah has commanded him:
Gather and gather as much strength as you can to face the enemies.
At this stage the Prophet (peace be upon him) said:
Be aware, archery is a force. Arrow throwing is a force, arrow throwing is a force. He added:
It is your duty to learn archery. Because it's a good game for you.
However, he forbade the animal to be his target. This is what the Arabs used to do in the age of ignorance. Hadrat Ibn 'Umar saw some people doing so and said:
The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) cursed the recipient of any living thing for the purpose of shooting an arrow.
The reason for this curse is that just as it wastes wealth, it also causes misery in life and destroys oneself. In fact, it would never be good for people to celebrate their own joys by suffering on any living entity in the world.
For this reason, the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) explicitly forbade animals to engage in internecine warfare. (Abu Dawood, Tirmidhi). The Arabs of that time used to engage two goats or two oxen (bulls) in such a way that they would fight and destroy and die. And when they saw it, they rejoiced, and burst into laughter. Explaining the reason for the prohibition of this work, the experts said: In this work, the animals are given a lot of pain and suffering. They were thrown into a difficult situation. Moreover, it is nothing but a futile act.
