One of the ways in which Islam has fought against the imitation of the age of ignorance is the practice of ignorance about the dead. Mourning for the dead, exaggerating too much grief and anguish is one of them.


Islam has taught its followers that death is no different than traveling or being transferred from one world to another. It is not a final destruction, annihilation and extinction. In addition, mourning does not bring the dead back to life. God's judgment will not be changed by any other judgment. Therefore, it is the duty of the believer to deal with every danger as patiently as he has to deal with death. Rather, it will take everything. He will hope in his heart that Allah's teachings will repeatedly say: Inna lillahe wa inna ilaihi rajiun - "We belong to Allah and we will return to Him."


Therefore, mourning for the dead in the age of ignorance is forbidden in Islam. He said that a person who goes to mourn for the dead, injures his face, tears his clothes and shouts like a fool is not considered among my ummah.


It is not halal or permissible for a Muslim to mourn for the dead, to wear mourning clothes, to avoid ornaments, and to change one's appearance. But in the death of the husband, what must be done for the wife must be done. For example, it is his duty to observe the waiting period of four months and ten days. For the husband, this legal mourning period of the wife is due to the termination of the conjugal life. She should be deeply saddened by the death of her husband. It shows respect for that sacred relationship. Therefore, he should not use any ornaments at this time, so as not to become attractive in the eyes of many people who want to get married during the waiting period.


But if the deceased is someone other than the husband - such as father, brother, son, mother, etc., it is not permissible for women to mourn for more than three days. Zaynab bint Abu Salma is quoted as saying from Umm Habiba, the wife of the Holy Prophet, when her father Abu Sufyan Ibn Haram died and Zaynab bint Jahash's brother died, they both used perfume and said: There was no need to apply perfume now No. But the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said that a woman who believes in Allaah and the Hereafter should not mourn for the dead for more than three nights. But the husband has to mourn for four months and ten days.


This mourning is obligatory for the husband. It should not be ignored. A woman came to the Prophet's service and said, "My daughter's husband has died." Now can I put antimony in his eyes? The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: No, he gave the same answer twice or thrice. By this it is clear that after the death of the husband, it is haraam for the wife to use beauty products and ornaments till the end of the waiting period.


However, it is normal to mourn and cry without shouting without showing any form of instability. There will be no sin for that. Hadrat 'Umar heard the girls weeping for Khalid ibn Walid. Then some men wanted to forbid them. Seeing this, Hazrat Umar (ra) said, "Let them go." Let them weep for Abu Sulaiman-Khalid until they raise their heads or shout loudly.
