POEM: MY DAUGHTER

My Daughter

My daughter will not marry a man
who does not throw net;
he has so much on his head.

If she dies helping out
could he afford a casket?
Does it not fall on me like nightfall?

My daughter will not marry a man
who does not know woods for canoe
because he has so much on his head.

If she feels to go fishing
Does she go borrowing
or hope in vain for one?
Since he lacks the craft of wood carving
what becomes of my tortor tobo?

My tortor tobo will not marry a man
who does not farm with his arms;
he has too much on his head.

My daughter is not for the highest bidder;
she is not a choice clothe in the market;
she is for the one who carries his head.

My daughter is not for the best rider;
she is for the rider who knows his head;
she is not a boneless fish;
she will break down
if all you do is use your 'coiled cobra' on her masterpiece.

My daughter's head is heavy laden
if you can carry hers on top of yours
Let her be given out of doors.

My ebitobo is not like the daughters of Eve;
she will show your nakedness to the world
if her lanky neck is carrying your overburdened head
because two hands must scrub each other to be clean.
