The money-grabbing desperation | Does it make you a better writer?

in writing •  2 years ago

When it comes to writing, one of the things I love so much about it is the joy of placing the final full-stop at the end of a write-up. It feels even more satisfactory when I do it after typing with a laptop.

The sound my keyboard makes at that point usually gives me a sense of achievement.

I always take that feeling as a sign of my growth and maturity as a writer.

You see, when I first got into this, the major motivation was the desire to make money. What else could it have been when the first thing I was told is that I can post stuff and get paid. Haha. And I don't blame the person for using that as a side attraction. because I was the one asking questions about where to make money.

Apparently, I was doing research on where to make money online. He gave me a website where I can write and earn Crypto. And that was the beginning of my journey.

I knew I didn't have the skill, I knew I wasn't good enough at the time to write something that would be worth getting paid for, I knew I had only 0.0001% knowledge of Crypto, but I was ready to grab the opportunity. My decision to do this despite my shortcomings was already a bonus point, but my source of inspiration was a big minus point.

The Inspiration

At that time, whenever I tried to write, I usually think of things that will get voted. I checked trending page to see a topics that are trending, then I jump on them like a metal drawn to a pool of magnets. From the first line of my writing, I usually think of the money I will earn from the post. When I finally published a post, I often imagine a scenario where everyone will be falling over themselves to bless the post with votes.

I'm allowed to dream, ain't I?

Hehe. I was so wrong!

You see, the desire to make money out of whatever you are doing (in this case, writing) is not bad in itself. After all, the whole point of consistently doing the stuff we do here is partly because we are passionate about it so, earning from it will always count as a nice idea.

Now, if you review what I narrated about my first days as a writer, you will notice that 'this guy' wasn't passionate about it and he didn't exactly love it. He was rather stitching up words and churning out articles because of his money-grabbing desperation. From what I've noticed, if you are all about the money when you barely know a thing about writing, it will become hard (impossible in some cases) for you to adopt the right approach in learning the rope as a writer.

What do you think will be the case when a newbie writes for a whole month without earning a reasonable figure?

You can take a guess...

I'm glad I got to meet the right set of people after my first 3 - 4 weeks. I got to talk with pros in the field who have been in the content creation industry for a long time with a good track record. Seriously, the type of people you meet in your journey always have a part to play in how your future will be. I learned so much about the creative process until I started seeing the possibility of digging deeper into writing.

Now, whatever I post usually has more to it than a mere attempt to get a vote. Each sentence I use in my post gives me joy and clicking the last full-stop at the end of a post, even if it's just a post of 100 words (not sure I've got any of those), usually gives me a high sense of satisfaction.

By the time I heard of Hive and subsequently came on board last year, it felt like a promotion from a lower league to the league of Champions and I've been enjoying everything I do here.

Thanks For Not Missing Any Full-stop Or Comma.
