FOOD FOR THOUGHT: THE GIFT OF SHAME

in r2cornell •  11 months ago

While some may view shame as something to be ashamed of, I have long been of the opinion that shame needs to be viewed as a gift which helps us avoid some indecencies and keeps us in check, when we are tempted to go overboard or descend too low. That, for me, is why shame is such a powerful gift, which everyone should have. The shamelessness that we find around is perhaps one of the strongest reasons we are where we are as a country and as a people. People openly stealing and commiting all sorts of crimes and other adults, shamelessly defending it on national television. It is the reason people commit sin and cause scandals and are emboldened to carry on as if all is well. My dear, all is not well, have some shame.

I can imagine how so different and much more beautiful our world would be if we all had the gift of shame. Imagine a man fighting with his wife, not caring for her and his children, sending them to mushroom schools when he can afford better, imagine paedophilia and rape, incest and all. Imagine being caught stealing, imagine celebrating ill-gotten wealth and acquisitions. There's so much to be ashamed of that we have refused to be ashamed of. We too need that gift of shame, such that if love of God does not keep us away from sin, the gift of shame would.

Lord, please bless us with the gift of shame. Amen.

Peace be with you!

Shame leads to guilt.

Guilt leads to fear.

...Fear is the tool of the devil (in theological context).

I can imagine how so different and much more beautiful our world would be if we all had the gift of shame.

More guilt, more fear, more control over others by using that guilt to manipulate them ?
Doesn't sound very 'good' to anyone who thinks shame/guilt/fear, is evil.

'The truth shall set you free' - as someone once said ... and shame is the hiding of a truth...

'The greatest trick the devil ever played, was not to convince you he didn't exists, but to convince you that shame was good, guilt was good, and fear was a good thing....

I see nothing of 'God' in this post.

And why is the feel of guit such a bad thing to think of? It keeps our consciences in check and helps us do whats right.
