I always find it curious, reading this gospel, that the people of Nazareth missed their opportunity simply because Jesus was to them a carpenter's son. They themselves attested to his wisdom and power and authority, and marvelled at it before they remembered he was the carpenter's son. Strange and unfortunate as it is, we too are often like that, allowing ourselves to be affected and trapped by what we call in local parlance, "see finish."
We admire people, we long to meet them, we desire them, but once we have them for a while, we begin to take them for granted and mistreat them and misbehave badly. The same applies to offices and vocations: we crave for the priesthood and pray all those long years, carefully working hard night and day, but once we get ordained, some of us become mad, others reckless and the priesthood we dreamed of and prayed for dissipates and recedes to a distant memory in the background. It happens in marriage and politics as well and in all walks of life. It happens also in our relationship with God and our work in the Church; we begin by being zealous and active but after a while, the fancy wears off and it becomes a boring routine to us and a drudgery.
The secret is to keep awe and wonder alive, to open our hearts and experience people and things anew everyday. That way we keep see finish at bay, but if we close our hearts and minds to awe and wonder, see finish reigns and from then on, the only way is down. At that point, the Priest doesn't enjoy the celebration of the Holy Mass, it becomes a "distraction" to him and a chore he would gladly skip or painfully and grudgingly perform, the married person no longer sees the beauty and goodness of his or her partner, and reduces the partner to their roles as provider or child bearer, stripped of all fondness and affection. Does this not explain why some who are married to some of the best people in the world, good looking and good natured, find themselves cheating away waywardly with some terrible people and taking each other for granted? Na see finish cause am. Similarly, the job you once dreamed of becomes a burden to you, even when you earn so much from it.
The antidote is to keep gratitude, awe and wonder alive. No matter how familiar you are with a thing, a person, a job, the Word of God, the Holy Mass, the Church, your Priest, your spouse, your children, find time to reflect on the wonders of them and be awestruck, thanking God for them every single day and that way, there will be hardly a chance that see finish overtakes you and ruins your life or drives away your joy and opportunity.
God doesn't often bless us through strangers or strange things, he often uses those around us, in our everyday lives and circle. That is why so many miss their blessings because they take these familiar blessings -- waking up everyday, good health, appetite, ability to sleep, family and friends -- for granted. Take no one, nothing for granted, make see finish no finish you.
Peace be with you!
