FOOD FOR THOUGHT: PROPER UPBRINGING

in r2cornell •  2 years ago

There is an African adage that when a child is conceived it belongs to the parents, but once it is born, it belongs to the community -- parents, neighbours, church, school, market, everyone. The implicit meaning is that the proper upbringing of a child is the responsibility of all responsible seniors and peers. It is sad that we have since jettisoned that prized value of our forebears and have taken on the individualism of western cultures, with its attendant decadence, often leading to suicide, homicide and mass murders, inter alia.

We must return to the basics, go back to the drawing board and radically repair what we have needlessly destroyed; we must restore proper child upbringing to every responsible person in society. Some parents today believe that proper upbringing is all about how much money they throw around; some churches are not so bothered about it, because these children cannot yet pay tithes or sow seeds, plus they don't want to offend parents who may withdraw their membership, while some schools are afraid of the backlash from parents who may fight them and the threat of losing patronage and the profit that comes with numbers. Neighbours do not want to risk being "told their life stories' and reminded of their own failings and shortcomings, so they simply "mind their business". This is the highway to failure we have travelled with top speed, and we must reverse now.

We will not always be with our children physically, at some point in their lives, it is the upbringing we have imparted on them that will remind them of us and our importance in their lives. Be deliberate about the proper upbringing of your children. God will ask you.

Peace be with you!
