I consider it safe to say that so much is wrong with our world, and much of what is wrong is traceable to indiscipline; from private to public, corporate to communal life, indiscipline has eroded our cherished values and principles, leaving us increasingly amoral and immoral. This cannot continue, it has to change; we need to inculcate and celebrate discipline in all spheres of our lives. Discipline is key to other virtues and indiscipline, on the flip side, is key to other vices.
Discipline should not be construed only in the negative, as intended only to deter us from evil, by punishing us when we err. Discipline is primarily intended to guide us to excellence, and only when we fail to excel should it be applied to deter us from continuing on that path of decline and error. So it is something positive, essential for growth and much to be desired.
It is heartbreaking and depressing that we have mostly given up on self-discipline, while some parents have generally capitulated in the battle to discipline their children, and abdicated that responsibility, leaving their children to grow like 'beasts in the wild'. One would have thought that the church will remain the bastion of discipline, but quite disappointingly, many churches have lost it for various unholy reasons. As a result, many of our parishes have become places where anything goes, and some Priests, in a bid to appear nice and not ruffle feathers or rock the boat have overlooked a lot of indiscipline in the liturgy, Sacraments, and general church administration. We can't continue like this.
It is not per chance that the followers of Jesus are called disciples, a word which shares the same root as discipline: we need to go back to the basics and become self-disciplined, and whenever we have the responsibility or duty, to enforce discipline without fear or favour. Every true disciple should love discipline, I trust you are.
Peace be with you!
