Nigeria's Gubernatorial Election: When the sun rises on 18th March...

When the sun rises on Saturday, 18th March 2023, it will present an opportunity to Nigerians in several States within the country. An opportunity to be actively involved in the electoral process to exercise their franchise and stand a chance of voting their preferred candidate into Governorship positions.

This election was scheduled to hold on 11th March, but to nobody's surprise, it got postponed to a week later. The postponement announcement was made official in the mid-week of last week by Nigeria's Electoral Commission and they cited "logistics challenges" as a reason for the postponement.

Seems like trouble is already brewing. Isn't it? What are we expecting from this Gubernatorial election?

For the record, this is going to be a mix of Governorship and State Assembly elections. It's also important to note that our Presidential election was held three weeks ago and the result of that election is still filled with so many controversies. The case is still getting heated in Court and we are about to have another election.

One thing we've come to accept (whether we like it or not) is that elections are no longer free and fair. This fact is surely not a good look for a country like ours, but it's looking like anyone that wants to stand a chance of getting into political positions would have to be ready to get his hands sullied. Lobbying, vote buying and thuggery is the real tool used by the vast majority to get themselves into the political seats of their choice.

Of course, none of these would fly if Nigerians had a decent standard of living, but we don't. Things are really hard. So many people live from hand to mouth and a lot more has reached a point in their life where they can do anything for quick cash. This is why it is proving easier for Politicians to use money and entice people who are willing to sell their votes for cash.

As we edge closer to D-day for this upcoming election, all eyes will be on our electoral commission, Politicians and the electorates. There are already signals to show that trouble is being brewed for that faithful day. We will see how the whole stuff will unfold.

Cuando salga el sol el sábado 18 de marzo de 2023, presentará una oportunidad para los nigerianos en varios estados del país. Una oportunidad de participar activamente en el proceso electoral para ejercer su derecho al voto y tener la oportunidad de votar a su candidato preferido para puestos de gobernador.

Esta elección estaba programada para el 11 de marzo, pero para sorpresa de nadie, se pospuso para una semana después. El anuncio del aplazamiento fue hecho oficial a mediados de la semana pasada por la Comisión Electoral de Nigeria y citaron "desafíos logísticos" como motivo del aplazamiento.

Una cosa que hemos llegado a aceptar (nos guste o no) es que las elecciones ya no son libres ni justas. Este hecho seguramente no es una buena apariencia para un país como el nuestro, pero parece que cualquiera que quiera tener la oportunidad de entrar en posiciones políticas tendría que estar listo para ensuciarse las manos. El cabildeo, la compra de votos y la matonería son las verdaderas herramientas utilizadas por la gran mayoría para acceder a los escaños políticos de su elección.

Por supuesto, ninguno de estos funcionaría si los nigerianos tuvieran un nivel de vida decente, pero no es así. Las cosas son muy difíciles. Muchas personas viven al día y muchas más han llegado a un punto en su vida en el que pueden hacer cualquier cosa por dinero rápido. Es por eso que está resultando más fácil para los políticos usar dinero y atraer a personas que están dispuestas a vender sus votos por dinero en efectivo.

A medida que nos acercamos al día D para estas próximas elecciones, todos los ojos estarán puestos en nuestra comisión electoral, los políticos y los electores. Ya hay señales que muestran que se están gestando problemas para ese día fiel. Veremos cómo se desarrollará todo el asunto.
