A Good Neighborhood is important

When I shifted to Muscat, I absolutely knew no one around. It was a new Country with full of strangers and I was so nervous about settling down here. When we were looking out for a place, I wanted a place which would make me feel comfortable, just not in the house but in my neighborhood as well. My first criteria were to find a place with my people around. When I say my people, I mean Indians. I have no diversity issues, but being away from home, having your own people around would give you some comfort.

Back home in India, we are very friendly with our neighbors. We visit each other's home anytime without any formalities. Whereas in some parts of the world I know that people do not even know who is staying next door to them. These are all cultural differences and everyone follows them the way they have experienced in their growing up.

In my 8 years of stay in this city, I have shifted to 3 homes and this has always been my first criteria to look at. Indian people around, a vibrant area and a place where I can get everything by walking around. These 3 things are very important for me. A supermarket has to be there in my neighborhood. I keep forgetting to buy household things and most of the time I realize it last minute and for that reason it is important for me to have a supermarket around my home. All my 3 homes have been in the supermarket building itself, which always makes things easier for me.

The other thing that matters to me is the lively neighborhood. While I like being alone at home to myself but when I look out of my home, I would like to see life around me. I do not like to see empty deserted streets. My second home was very beautiful, but it faced the back side of the road where I would barely see anyone on the road. All I would see is an empty street and I somehow would feel very depressed looking at it. In a year's time along with this reason and other reasons, we shifted from that home.

I like a place where there are children in the neighborhood, they bring a lot of life to the place. It feels lively to have them around. Though sometimes they do get very noisy but it's better than the killing silence. I like to stay in a locality where there are cafes and restaurants around. Though I do not visit them much, but just the vibe is felt good. For me these things do matter in life, having a good neighborhood, because that kind of has an emotional impact on me.

An ideal house for me to have all of these and by the sea side, but sadly I have not been able to get there. I found one such place here, but the rent was too high, so I had to give up the idea. Probably in future if my pockets permit then I can shift.
