The Royal Maundy is an ancient ceremony dating back to the 13th C, inspired by The Bible. When Henry IV became king(April 3 1367 – March 20 1413), he introduced a new tradition. On the day before Good Friday, the Royal Family would take part in a ceremony whwre by they would wash the feet of the poor and give money and gifts. It became the custom for the sovereign to perform the ceremony, and the event became known as the Royal Maundy
HENRY IV
The first true "Maundy money" ceremony took place in the reign of Charles II, when the king gave people specific undated hammered coins in 1662. The coins were a four penny, three penny, two penny and one penny piece. By 1670 the king started giving out a dated set of all four coins, and this has remained the same ever since.

Maundy money has traditionally been made of sterling silver. The use of sterling silver continued following the Coinage Act of 1971 and after decimalisation in 1971, the face values of the coins were increased from old to new pence.
Elizabeth took charge of the throne in 1953, and since The Queen’s reign began, her portrait on ordinary circulating coinage has been updated four times. As a cool little homage to her service, Maundy money still bears the origin portrait of Her Majesty. The original portrait was created by Mary Gillick, and it appeared on the first coins of her reign in 1953.
