A coin to commemorate peace: UK vs FRANCE

in instablurt •  3 years ago

Throughout the month of April, ill be looking back at historical moments from the past. From conflicts to coronations, sporting moments to royal memories, and famous firsts and lasts. With my love of all things shiny and precious, ill be trying to tie these events in with coins that have been created to commemorate these moments.

The British five pound coin is a commemorative denomination of the pound sterling. Its obverse has featured the profile of Queen Elizabeth II since the coin’s introduction in 1990.

One of these commemorative crowns was issued in 2004, to mark the 100th anniversary of the friendly peaceful agreement between Great Britain and France known as the Entente Cordiale.

The obverse shows the Ian Rank-Broadley bust of the Queen. The reverse is by David Gentleman and depicts both Britannia and Marianne. The Entente Cordiale was a formal agreement that tidied up the relations between Britain and France since the less formal agreements after the Napoleonic wars in 1815. It also ‘fixed’ a few issues relating to British and French colonies

The Entente Cordiale was a colonial-era agreement signed by the British Foreign Secretary, Lord Lansdowne, and the French Ambassador, Paul Cambon, in London on 8 April 1904 with the aim of settling long-standing disputes between the United Kingdom and France in countries such as Morocco, Egypt, Siam, Madagascar, the New Hebrides, West and Central Africa and Newfoundland. But it had a wider significance in that it also represented a shift from a history overshadowed by conflict and rivalry to a sustained era of rapprochement and alliance. The agreements were also crucial in paving the way for Franco-British diplomatic and military cooperation in the lead-up to World War One.

The £5 coin is one of the lesser known UK coins and is never intended to be circulating. It holds UK legal tender status, so can technically be used to pay court debt and other debts. You can find £5 coins readily on the secondary market, costing very little over face value, and can add that little bit extra to your collection.
