I came upon this palm-like tree called Pandanus Utilis, also known as the common screwpine, at the edge of the Gardens by the Bay, along the sea coast.
Pandanus Utilis has aerial roots at the base of the trunk, or what is called stilt roots, which is thought to be good for erosion control.
The leaves have many uses. They can be woven into baskets, mats, bags… The leaves have ‘teeth’, or sharp spines on both sides. So, one has to be careful when handling them, or you will be cut left, right and center.
The fruits are edible, but they have to be cooked first, and according to reports, they are not most flavourable to humans.
