1994 Associate nations are competing in the "ICC Trophy". Zimbabwe got Test status after winning this tournament, before that Sri Lanka. As a result, the tournament was not only a qualifier for the next World Cup but also a step towards gaining Test status. And Bangladesh's name was being loudly mentioned as the hot favorite in that tournament

Bangladesh lost to Kenya in a high-scoring match in the quarter-finals. The Kenyans lost to the Mighty West Indies in the next World Cup and insisted on gaining Test status. Bangladesh was not there then. Bangladesh won the 1997 ICC tournament, beating Kenya in the final. Then Bangladesh's demand for Test status was made along with Kenya. However, Kenya is still ahead in-field performance.

Meanwhile, the ICC decided that the first Champions Trophy (the one-day tournament with the then nine Test players) would be held in Dhaka. The purpose is twofold. To test the organizational skills of BCB and to see what kind of spectators cricket has in Bangladesh. Every match of that tournament was housefull. Legendary commentators such as Richie Benoit and Tony Kozier praised the audience. Every time a good ball or a good shot was cheered by the spectators, the great Tony Gregg said, "These spectators deserve their own team."
