Helicopter crashes with Indian defense chief

The helicopter carrying General Bipin Rawat, India's former army chief and the country's first chief of defense staff, with 14 crew members, crashed. It crashed in the Nilgiris Hills of Tamil Nadu around 12:30 pm local time on Wednesday (December 6). Among those on board, the helicopter was General Bipin Rawat, a member of his family, a number of personnel including his defense assistant, security commandos, and other Air Force officials.

So far five people have been confirmed dead in the incident. Besides, four people have been taken to the hospital with severe burns. The injured were taken to a military hospital at Wellington Base, Indian news agency ANI reported, citing its own sources. The condition of the rest is not yet known.
The Indian Air Force (IAF) has confirmed the presence of General Bipin Rawat in the helicopter. An inquiry has also been ordered into the incident. Former Indian Army chief General JJ Singh told NDTV that the bodies recovered were so badly burnt that it was difficult to identify them. Rescuers were also badly burned. Details of the helicopter's occupants and those killed have not yet been released.
