The Voodoo man in our local market square

in instablurt •  3 years ago
One day, I went to the local market in my community to get some food stuff, I and my friend. On getting to the market, I saw a large crowd from afar and I decided to go see what was amidst.

My friend tried to stop me, telling me that it was gambling, that I would end up losing all my money. I told her I just want to know what was up, besides, I can never get involved in any gambling. So we moved closer to the place. I saw a man dressed in black with a red turban. He was a voodoo man.

He was trying to perform some magic. I took some more steps closer for a better view, as it was my first time of seeing a magician perform. On getting closer, he had a white basin beside him and a white piece of clothing. He was chanting some magical words, saying he will turn a piece of paper into money.

I secured my own money first by putting it in my inner pocket. He said someone from the crowd should bring a white piece of paper, that he will turn it into money. People were scared of moving out. The old man reiterated his words, assuring them that nothing will happen to them.

After a while a young man of about 35 years moved out of the crowd to the circle with a white piece of paper. He placed the piece of paper inside the White basin and stood still watching the magician.

The magician jumped up in excitement and chanted some words. He picked up the white piece of clothing and covered the white basin as he carried it up. He continued with his conjouring.

After some seconds he dropped the basin and uncovered the white piece of clothing. Behold the white piece of paper had turned into a 100 naira notes. From time to time, I checked to be sure that my own money was intact, because I knew that he must have commanded the money from somewhere.

People were surprised and everyone got more interested in what the man was doing. While I was there, he performed some more magics like turning a rats into a black hen.

At the end of the day, he started distributing some white handkerchiefs. He said that it will bring Good Fortune to anyone who would wipe his or her face with it. I was there just to see what was happening, and not to get involved or partake in any of those events. So many people rejected the handkerchief while some others were bold enough to collect.

Finally, he told them that anyone who would support his transportation back to his sacred space will receive some good news within 3 days. People started putting some tokens in the white basin for him.

At that point I tipped my friend and we left the place. In all, it was a nice experience, as that was my very first time of witnessing an African magician perform.
