Football's hypocrisy

in instablurt •  3 years ago

The fact that most media outlets and football fans are no longer mentioning Lewandoski for the 2022 ballon d'or despite his tremendous form and statistics is what I tag as the greatest hypocrisy in football in recent years.

Just recently I saw a post on a popular football page which placed Benzema as the favorite, and Salah, Mane and De Bruyne as the contenders implying that these players are currently rated above Lewandoski for the award.

Lewandoski has 33 goals and 2 assists in the Bundesliga, 13 goals and 3 assists in the UCL and no goal in the DFB Pokal. That is a total of 46 goals and 5 assists, 51 goals contribution.

Benzema on the other hand has 25 goals and 11 assists in La liga, 12 goals and 1 assist in the UCL and no goal in the Copa Del Rey. That is a total of 37 goals and 12 assists, 49 goals contribution.

Lewandoski leads in the goals and assists combination.

Lewandoski has won the Bundesliga while Benzema is just a point away from winning the La liga.

Benzema has a collective edge over Lewandoski in the UCL as his team has advanced to the semifinals whereas Lewandoski's team has been knocked out.

Lewandoski has an individual edge over Benzema as he is bound to win the Golden shoe and he's leading in the goals and assists combination.

Both players will win the topscorer award for their respective leagues. And both players are ahead of Salah, Mane and De Bruyne in the goals and assists combination.

Yet with all these statistics, Lewandoski's name has been swept under the carpet in the ratings for the ballon d'or.

Last season, Lewandoski won the Bundesliga title and topscorer award, the European golden shoe. He was not even the UCL topscorer, he was knocked out of DFB Pokal and was knocked out of the UCL in the quarter finals.

This season Lewandoski has repeated almost the same, he has won the Bundesliga title, the Bundesliga topscorer award and the European golden shoe are bound to be his. He is currently UCL topscorer, he has been knocked out of the DFB Pokal and was knocked out the UCL in the quarter finals again.

Now where does the hypocrisy come in?

With that last season's stats, the media and fans around the world claimed that Messi robbed Lewandoski off the ballon d'or.

Messi won the Copa Del Rey, pichichi award, Copa America, Copa America topscorer award, Copa America golden ball and was Copa America's top assister as well.

The fact that the media and fans around the world are no longer considering Lewandoski for the ballon d'or to the extent of placing Benzema, Salah, Mane and De Bruyne ahead of him in the current ratings, despite Lewandoski having almost an exact repeat of his last season's performance clearly shows the high level of hypocrisy.

It's now a double standard

I understand this. It's usually sad to hear same story about Lewandowski each year whenever he gets snubbed during notable awards. Most of the awards he has are in Bundesliga but this lad deserves some European awards. It's sad that he isn't get much of that despite his consistent record.
