THE BARBARIC CUTTING OF GIRLS

Dear blurt friends, there are so many African barbaric practices that are defacing us. Examples of such are tribal marks, scarification, corporal punishment, early child marriage and female genital mutilation. Of all these barbarism, my attention here is on female genital mutilation (FGM).

Female Genital Mutilation

This refers to all practices involving partial or total removal of the external female genitalia or other injury to the female genital organs.
This practice has resulted into untold damages to many children which later affected them to older ages.

This practices is in different categories

Infibulation

This is narrowing the vaginal opening through the creation of a covering seal. This seal is created by cutting and repositioning the inner, outer and labia. It could be with or without the removal of the clitoris.

Excision

This is partial or total removal of the clitoris and the labia minora with or without excision of the labia majora.

Clitoridectomy

This refers to the removal of the clitoris which is a small sensitive and erectile part of the female genitals
This needless, uncivilised and barbaric practices being performed by untrained traditional excisers or birth attendants and sometimes medical professionals had caused untold damages to many females of which many of them are still suffering the consequences.

The risk factors

The risk factors are many and are dangerous. They have both short as well as long term affects. Some of these effects are listed:

• Genital tissue damage
• Reproductive track infection
• Urinary track infections
• Menstrual problems
• Virginal discharge
• Virginal itching
• Reduced sexual desire and arousal
• Pain
• Shock
• Genital tissue swelling
• Wound healing problems
• Excessive bleeding
• Caesarian section
• Instrumental delivery
• Stillbirth and early neonatal death
• Prolonged labour
• Decreased lubrication during sexual intercourse
• Anxiety disorder
• Depression
• Infant resuscitation at delivery
  Some long term effects of this dastardly practices due to infection.
  

With all the above, this wicked act must stop and any one found still practising it should be prosecuted.
