Continua la nostra escursione nei siti lombardi della provincia di Como. Questa volta siamo stati a Brienne, un antico borgo che vale la pena visitare almeno una volta nella vita. Le sue origini sono incerte e possono ancora essere fatte risalire al periodo celtico. Tuttavia, le prime autentiche testimonianze scritte risalgono al X secolo.
We continue our excursion in the Lombard sites in the province of Como. This time we were in Brienne, an ancient village that is worth visiting at least once in a lifetime. Its origins are uncertain and can still be traced back to the Celtic period. However, the first authentic written evidence dates back to the tenth century.
Il paese è situato su un colle, prospiciente il lago, di fronte al paese di Nesso. Le strade sono strette e impraticabili, le case sono molto vicine tra loro e l'intero posto sembra essere immerso nel romanticismo di una volta. Il nome sembra derivare proprio dal celtico e può significare "Monte" o "Condottiero", "Capo", "Vertice", "Dio della Guerra".
The village is situated on a hill, overlooking the lake, opposite the village of Nesso. The streets are narrow and impassable, the houses are very close to each other and the whole place seems to be immersed in the romance of the past. The name seems to derive from Celtic and can mean "Mount" or "Condottiero", "Capo", "Vertice", "God of War".
Ogni angolo di Brienne nasconde particolarità e dettagli magici, e mentre cammini per le strade puoi godertelo facilmente muovendo lo sguardo qua e là. Penso in particolare alla Chiesa dei Santi Nazaro e Celsa: si affaccia sul lago ed è costruita in stile barocco. La parte inferiore del campanile è quindi in stile romanico.
Every corner of Brienne hides peculiarities and magical details, and as you walk through the streets you can easily enjoy it by moving your eyes here and there. I'm thinking in particular of the Church of Saints Nazaro and Celsa: it overlooks the lake and is built in Baroque style. The lower part of the bell tower is in Romanesque style.
Vediamo anche la Chiesa di San Vittore (detta anche Chiesa di Sant'Anna). Anche in questo caso il campanile prosegue in stile romanico. Un altro edificio da non perdere è la Galleria Mina, un tunnel utilizzato durante la Grande Guerra per impedire ai nemici di entrare in città. Apparentemente per impedire al nemico di attaccare, era pieno di mine pronte ad esplodere anche al minimo segnale. Infine troviamo la Torre di San Vittore, torre medioevale di cui oggi restano solo poche.
We also see the Church of San Vittore (also known as the Church of Sant'Anna). Also in this case the bell tower continues in Romanesque style. Another building not to be missed is the Galleria Mina, a tunnel used during the Great War to prevent enemies from entering the city. Apparently to prevent the enemy from attacking, it was full of mines ready to explode even at the slightest signal. Finally we find the Tower of San Vittore, a medieval tower of which only a few remain today.
