Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky on Saturday (9/7/2022) sacked several senior Kyiv envoys abroad, including the country's ambassador to Germany.
Quoted from Reuters on Sunday (10/7/2022) Volodymyr Zelensky announced the firing of Ukraine's ambassadors to Germany, India, Czech Republic, Norway and Hungary and said new candidates were being prepared for the position.
"This rotation is a normal part of diplomatic practice," Zelensky said.
Zelensky has urged his diplomats to garner international support and military assistance for Ukraine.
Andriy Melnyk, who was appointed by Zelensky's predecessor as ambassador to Germany in late 2014, is well known among politicians and diplomats in Berlin.
Kyiv and Berlin are currently at loggerheads over a German-made turbine undergoing maintenance in Canada.
Germany wants Ottawa to return the turbines to Russian natural gas giant Gazprom to pump gas to Europe, but Kyiv has urged Canada to keep the turbines, saying returning would violate sanctions against Moscow.
This makes Kyiv's relationship with Germany, which relies heavily on Russian energy supplies, turn very sensitive.
Separately, Canada on Saturday (9/7/2022) plans to return the turbine.
