Sri Lankan President Gotabaya Rajapaksa resigned after leaving his country due to massive demonstrations.
Thus, Sri Lanka's parliament is preparing to elect a new president on 20 July 2022.

This needs to be done to repair Sri Lanka's politics, which was devastated by the lack of fuel that crippled the prices of basic commodities.
Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe will become interim president although protesters also do not want him to take the position.

Wickremesinghe's private residence was torched by demonstrators last weekend and his office was stormed this week.

However, Sri Lanka's ruling party Podujana Peramuna nominated Wickremesinghe to take the interim presidency.

"We are very happy today that he (Rajapaksa, ed) resigned and we feel that when we, the people, come together, we can do everything," said one of the protesters, Arunananda, 34, quoted by Reuters on Friday (15/15/2020). 7).

The Sri Lankan Bar Association has asked parliament to ensure that elections for Rajapaksa's successor are held without delay.

"Members of Parliament must do everything in their power to prevent Sri Lanka from falling into further chaos and to restore social, political and economic stability," the Sri Lanka Bar Association said in a statement.
