Hello everyone, we bring you another festival from the Chinese culture.
Lantern Festival which holds on the 15th day of the Chinese New Year, it brings to an end the celebration of new year in Chinese.
The Lantern Festival being the first traditional festival that comes up after the Chinese New Year. You see activities like, people lighting up lanterns, engaging in lantern riddles, enjoying yuan xiao and having fun time with families, friends and lovers and also fireworks.
It is said that the Lantern Festival began far back 2000 years ago in the time of the Han Dynasty. During that time, Buddhism was well known in China.
The Emperor Ming, got the information that some monks on the 15th day of the lunar month, would be lighting candles for the Buddha, He then gave orders that the imperial palace, temples and citizens should light candles and also hand lanterns.
So, the lighting candles passed on from generation to generation till present day as a tradition
The Lanterns being the symbol of the festival and today red lanterns hang in the streets. They can also be found in homes and shops, and often depict riddles and traditional Chinese folklore.
Countless types of lanterns have been so far, from small palm-sized balloons to giant floats.
In a few regions, lanterns are burned to decide the sex of a future child from the way the ashes are formed.
