On the Grass, They Were Caught Copulating!

Yesterday afternoon, I captured a wonderful sight on my camera phone, and I'd like to share it with you!

Right before it started raining, I saw two small creatures in the meadow that afternoon. Two Hubner's wasp moths (Amata huebneri) were in copulation.

Unfortunately, I have no way of knowing which is male and which is female. In some situations, the majority of females are larger than the males in mating insects, but they are the same size.

When they mate, they do it back-to-back style, which is a frequent feature of insects in the Lepidoptera order (butterflies and moths). Look at that! How cute they are! 😍
