It's not a grave, I promise!
It's actually the start of my garden. Like, the very start. You never know how long you'll be living at a particular place, but I'm thinking long term, and ripping up half the massive back yard to grow vegetables.
Under the mossy lawn is some nice-looking soil, with few rocks, and lots of worms.
Exposing it will be the main issue.
The weather has become mild here in Northwestern BC Canada. Nights rarely drop below freezing now. That can change if we get an "arctic outflow" late winter blast, but it feels like time to get digging.
I have to be careful with my heart issue and other health problems, and I'm taking care of 2 young children, so that was about all I could get done in a day. But I'll probably be out there again tomorrow, to clear a similar-sized patch. And the next day. By then, there will be room to plant some lettuce and other spring greenery.
You can see my new firepit in the rough area out back. The start of a garden bed is on the left.
Here's how I envision it when I'm done:
So, I've got a very long way to go. It will have to be a steady grind... a constant effort that will get the job done. At least we get long springs here, and the ground only thawed this past week. I have my grandfather's old shovel, and I'm ready to get to work.
More than ever before, I think we need to be growing our own food whenever possible. Even if it's just one plant on a patio or windowsill, we should be practicing it regularly. Food is something we all need and will always be in demand, everywhere there are humans.

Wow, that's going to be a BIG garden! :)
That's a lot of work! Digging up sod like that is really hard. If you have any spare money, I recommend this tool:

Good luck with your garden! I'm so happy you have so much space now.
Lovely, that's one of those things I wil love to have once I have my own house, to have a little garden where I can grow all various green vegetables and herbs for my household consumption.
Here, it has refuse to rain and the intense heat has been unbearable,I bath more than 5 times daily to see that I have a normal body temperature and not sweating profusely.
Lol 😀. I laughed at your caption/title, what a good start! True, growing vegetables and other plants is very important. Planting does not only help the environment but also your pocket.
I do plants green vegetables like malunggay, vine spinach, tomato and papaya.
Wishing you an awesome start into the gardening season!!! 🏡👨🌾🌿🌱🌳🌴🌾🌵I'm really curious how your stuff will develop!!
When we work the land, our hands connect with the energy of creation, healing and balancing our thoughts.
I have some small potted plants at home, and I grow chives, chili peppers, and I have even been able to enjoy eggplant.
I also think that everyone, wherever we are, should work the land, even if it is in small containers.
If you have illness problems, the fact of plunging your hands into the ground helps to release your static energy and that will help you feel better, all calm and at your own pace. I think that the most important thing is to enjoy what we do every day. days, that can make the difference to have wonderful days full of good vibes.😀
Despite the health problem you present, you have decided to start this project that you talked about when you had just moved.
I hope that with this exercise of digging and moving the earth, in some way your heart will be strengthened, because I imagine that, as the muscles are strengthened with the exercise, in the same way, it happens with your heart, which would be great.
Apart from lettuce, what else can be grown in this season? Here in Chile, it is very common to see, both in backyards and in front of houses, tomato, corn, eggplant, paprika, and a light green long chili pepper that is very, very spicy.
Wow! that's a spacious one, the soil looks healthy for growing vegetables. Can't wait to see some greens and berries growing on that garden. Growing our own food is the best, we know how organic and healthy we are eating.
Great start on the garden, I'm looking forward to seeing the progress.
Congratulations!
