Making a firepit in my backyard

in garden •  2 years ago

Spring is coming to my part of Canada! My first outdoor project at this new house is a firepit out back. @MediKatie and I love having access to fire wherever we are, and now it's a reality.

Beyond the lawn area (future garden and greenhouse), there's about 1/4 acre of rough field. In the center, there's a slight depression, which looks perfect for a firepit. Maybe someone had one here many years ago?

I started by raking away the top layer of dead dry grass, and marking the perimeter of the pit with my shovel.

Then I began digging it out!

Some of the soil was still frozen solid! But some was loose and warm, with plenty of worms, which bodes well for my gardening aspirations here.

I set the chunks of sod aside to use as fill in an upcoming project.

Me 8 years ago would have polished this firepit off in an afternoon, but this actually took me 3. In 2016 my nervous system started crapping out on me, and in 2021 I suddenly developed myocarditis and heart failure. There are no doctors taking new patients here, the walk-in clinics only serve current patients, and there's no access to healthcare except at the hospital's emergency room. So I have no professional advice, no treatment, no support... just doing everything I can to heal myself and carry on.

But I got it done! Evened out the surface with a rake. Then, rolled my steel fireplace into the center. (It used to be a wheel on a big truck.)

A firepit on the property is more than just somewhere to hang out in the evening. For me, this is also an emergency source of cooking, heating, and sterilizing water. It's also a way to get rid of unwanted organic debris. My garden plants will get a boost from the ash. Fire has social, cultural, and spiritual significance. I'm glad I washed that thing and tossed it onto the moving van last autumn!

Wasn't long before I had kindling, small dry logs, some paper junk that needed burning, and somewhere to sit! This feels like a real upgrade!

Katie and I took our little boy and baby girl into the backyard as evening fell. We saw a beautiful half moon, some planets, and hundreds of stars as it got darker. Then, it was time to test out the new firepit.

I think fire was one of our earliest tools - we've been using it for various things for millions of years. Our ancestors relied on fire for warmth, protection from animals, cooking, hygiene, and so much more. The current generation is the first to really lose touch with fire. I'm happy my children are growing up with knowledge of fire.

It was a nice night at our new firepit! I already have ideas for improvements I can make. And I'm really looking forward to starting my garden for the year.

I reblurted that! Thank you for making the fire pit. Where'd you get the car part? LOL You did a mighty fine job even if you can't do it as fast as you used to. You two looked so cute getting that done out there. It was a nice treat all of use out together. This yard has much better ambience for campfire, it was a nice nippy night for a fire.

You are very creative! But in our place we are not allowed to make fire/bonfire outside the house.

That's too bad. More and more places for people to live don't have access to fire. It's a nice option to have. This is one reason I moved here... and I am lucky to have it.
Thanks for your comment!

Great job on creating a firepit in your backyard, It's always fun to have a cozy spot to gather around with friends and family during those chilly nights.

Your step-by-step guide and photos are very helpful and inspiring. I appreciate how you repurposed materials and incorporated natural elements into your design. It's not only practical, but also visually appealing.

I hope you get to enjoy many memorable evenings around your new firepit. Well done

Thanks, friend! Maybe someday we can share a firepit evening.

It is good, my dear friend, that you have prepared a place to warm yourself in the open air. I learned about this when I arrived in Chile, since in Venezuela, being a tropical country, you don't need to do something like this, in almost all cities. However, there is a mountain climate, since the Andes mountain range is born in Venezuela, but I have not seen bonfires made in houses and other tourist places. Electricity is very cheap in this country, despite the fact that its economy is practically destroyed.

Looks really cosy buddy!!! Awesome! Would love to smoke a cigarette there with you buddy!!! 😍

Awesome brother! Looks like a great way to stay warm.

Thanks for handling that 300k for me. I just took it back. I've got some far more interesting "games" coming up. Should rock the boat just a bit, in all the right ways. ;)

Best to you and your girl.

oh...also,

Can you can keep an eye out on my friend @poetic-justice.

I met him here in Thailand and he reminded me of you! hahaha

He has zero experience with this kind of platform and never heard of steemit or hive either. So any advice you can give him or help him along would be great, as we need more like minded people here to grow the platform and gain a reputation; to then to attract more like minded people and further grow the platform.

Hey bro, thank you again for the delegation. It was a nice March with that extra power behind my votes! I'm doing up a short post about my progress to 1,000,000 BP. I just hit 800k which is great, but 200k is a lot to earn in just 276 days! Especially considering that 800k is my accumulated earnings over 10 years of content-creation (BTC donations on YouTube, used it to buy Steem, converted to Hive, then all in on Blurt). Now I want to add 1/4 of that total amount in just 9 months. Where there's a will there's a way, right?!

Hmmm, @poetic-justice.... that name rings a bell. Maybe I've met them on another platform? Or maybe someone else also uses that name. Or maybe I'm high? ;P

But yes, I will look in on him, and see how I can help him get settled on Blurt.

All the best from Canada, say hi to Jungle Girl for me!

Jungl girl says hello. Sorry for the late reply. We are just still crazy busy. Glad I could help with the delegation. Keep up the amazing blog and lets grow Blurt!

AWESOME! Now you are officially moved in :)
