Politics has been called all sorts of nasty names over the years and we are consistently adding more to the list, but calling it a 'dirty game' or expressing other sorts of derogatory remarks towards it still doesn't stop Politicians from doing what they do best.
It's almost like we've reached a point in history where we can't afford to put our blind faith in Politicians because they always find ways to mess things up and shatter people's hope. And I've heard questions like;
"Don't they have a conscience?"
Oh, dear... Maybe they store their conscience in an external hard drive whenever they do their Politicking. This explains why a lot of them shamelessly campaign and run for more tenures and Political offices despite making a huge mess in whatever position they previously held.
You know that I'm not making any of these up. Politicians are pretty much made of the same cloth all over the world and Politics is filled with dark sides in different parts of the world.
Nigeria's politics is the one I know too well;
It is a playground for people who are capable of covering up their dirts and manipulating average Nigerians just to reach the top. Connections, wealth and an ability to sell a lie are what keeps them in the game. Anyone that doesn't fit in can easily get pushed down the pecking order with nothing fancy on his or her political career.
Most of the Politicians in this part of the world didn't get where they are by luck. They did the nasty job of bribing kingmakers, placing a strong lock on the lips of the press, enticing the masses with political promises, etc.
We witnessed all these over the last couple of weeks and months as our Presidential and gubernatorial election was underway. Now, the election has come to an end and many winners will be sworn into office.
The masses are now left with the usual questions;
Will they keep to their word?
Will they fulfil their juicy political promises?
If we choose not to be naively optimistic, then, I'm sure we've all learned a thing or two from history about our Politicians and the promises they made while running their campaigns. There is still no clear-cut way of telling if the next regime will be better or worse that the ones they are replacing. We just have to brace ourselves for whatever becomes of the series of Political promises we got.
I mean, that's politics for you. You can't afford to place all your faith in the things you heard from them.

La política de Nigeria es la que conozco demasiado bien;
Es un patio de recreo para personas que son capaces de encubrir sus suciedades y manipular a los nigerianos promedio solo para llegar a la cima. Las conexiones, la riqueza y la capacidad de vender una mentira son lo que los mantiene en el juego. Cualquiera que no encaje fácilmente puede ser empujado hacia abajo en el orden jerárquico sin nada especial en su carrera política.
La mayoría de los políticos en esta parte del mundo no llegaron a donde están por suerte. Hicieron el desagradable trabajo de sobornar a los hacedores de reyes, poner un fuerte candado en los labios de la prensa, atraer a las masas con promesas políticas, etc.
Fuimos testigos de todo esto durante las últimas semanas y meses cuando nuestra elección presidencial y de gobernador estaba en marcha. Ahora, la elección ha llegado a su fin y muchos ganadores tomarán posesión de sus cargos.
Las masas ahora se quedan con las preguntas habituales;
¿Mantendrán su palabra?
¿Cumplirán sus jugosas promesas políticas?
Si elegimos no ser ingenuamente optimistas, entonces, estoy seguro de que todos hemos aprendido un par de cosas de la historia sobre nuestros políticos y las promesas que hicieron mientras dirigían sus campañas. Todavía no existe una forma clara de saber si el próximo régimen será mejor o peor que los que están reemplazando. Solo tenemos que prepararnos para lo que sea que pase con la serie de promesas políticas que obtuvimos.
Quiero decir, eso es política para ti. No puede darse el lujo de poner toda su fe en las cosas que escuchó de ellos.
