A Story of an Ambassador Of USA

“আমাকে জিজ্ঞেস করা হয়েছে, গত তিন বছরে বাংলাদেশে আমার সবচেয়ে মধুর স্মৃতি কোনগুলো। সেসব স্মৃতি বর্ণনা করা অসম্ভব।

কিন্তু আমি জানি, আমার মনে পড়বে এখানকার রঙিন রিকশা আর এর চালকদের মুখগুলো। পুরনো ঢাকার দালানের ছাদে সুতোর বাঁধনে উড়ন্ত ঘুড়ির নাচন আর সন্ধ্যার আকাশের পাখিরা। গাঁয়ের পথে স্কুলের পোশাক পরা শিশুদের পায়ে হেঁটে বাড়ি ফেরা। চট্টগ্রামের জাহাজ ভরা নদী। কক্সবাজারের চাঁদের ফালির মতো পৃথিবীর সবচেয়ে সুন্দর নৌকাগুলো। সিলেটের গাঢ় সবুজ পাহাড় আর বরিশালের বৈচিত্র্যময় সবুজ। বান্দরবানের পাহাড় ও সুন্দরবনের ম্যানগ্রোভ বনাঞ্চলে ভোরের কুয়াশা, সবকিছু।

গত তিন বছর বাংলাদেশে নিযুক্ত যুক্তরাষ্ট্রের রাষ্ট্রদূত হিসেবে দায়িত্ব পালন আমার জীবনের অন্যতম বড় সম্মান ও আনন্দের।

যুক্তরাষ্ট্র ও বাংলাদেশের মধ্যেকার শক্তিশালী সম্পর্ক রয়েছে এবং এটা আরো জোরদার হবে। সিনেটর এডওয়ার্ড কেনেডি ১৯৭২ সালে ঢাকা বিশ্ববিদ্যালয়ে যেমন বলেছিলেন, আমেরিকার আসল পররাষ্ট্রনীতি হলো নাগরিকের সাথে নাগরিকের, বন্ধুর সাথে বন্ধুর, এবং মানুষের সাথে মানুষের। আমার মনে হয়, আমি আমাদের দু’দেশের বন্ধুত্বের বন্ধনকে শক্তিশালী করতে কিছুটা হলেও ভূমিকা রেখেছি।

আমি মাননীয় প্রধানমন্ত্রী শেখ হাসিনাকে বলেছিলাম, আমার কার্যভার নেয়ার প্রথম আট মাসে আমি বাংলাদেশের আটটি বিভাগ ঘুরে দেখব। সেটা করতে পেরে আমি নিজেকে ভাগ্যবান মনে করি। নিজেকে আরো ভাগ্যবান মনে হয় এই জন্য যে, এই অসাধারণ দেশের এত মানুষের সাথে আমি সাক্ষাৎ করতে পেরেছি এবং অনুভব করেছি তাঁদের হৃদয়ের উষ্ণতা, সৌজন্য ও উদারতা যা বাংলাদেশের মানুষের অনন্য বৈশিষ্ট্য।

বাংলাদেশের সহৃদয় মানুষদের সব অনুগ্রহের স্মৃতি আমি সযত্নে ধরে রাখবো। এই অসাধারণ দেশে আমি বিশেষ সুবিধাপ্রাপ্ত অতিথি হওয়ার সুযোগ পেয়েছি এবং কৃতজ্ঞচিত্তে বিদায় নিচ্ছি।

একটা অনুরোধ রাখবো। যখন রাষ্ট্রদূত হাস আসবেন, তাঁকেও আপনারা একই উষ্ণতা ও সহায়তা দেবেন যা আপনারা আন্তরিকভাবে আমাকে ও আমার পরিবারকে দিয়েছেন।”

“I have been asked for my favorite memories of my three years in Bangladesh. It is impossible to describe them all.

But I know I will recall the colors of the rickshaws and the faces of the drivers. The rooftops of Old Dhaka and the kites, those dancing on a string and the birds in the evening sky. Children in school uniforms walking home on a village road. The ship filled rivers of Chittagong. The moon boats of Cox’s Bazar, the most beautiful boats in the world. The dark green hills of Sylhet and iridescent green of Barishal. Morning mist on the mountains of Bandarban and on the mangroves of the Sundarbans.

It has been one of the great honors and joys of my life to serve as U.S. Ambassador to Bangladesh over the past three years.

The U.S. – Bangladesh relationship is strong and will grow stronger. As Senator Edward Kennedy said at Dhaka University in 1972, the real foreign policy of America is citizen to citizen, friend to friend, people to people. I hope I contributed in some small way to strengthening our friend-to-friend bonds.

I told the Honorable Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina I would visit all eight divisions of Bangladesh my first eight months. I was so lucky to do so. Lucky to meet so many people of this great country, to experience a warmth and graciousness and generosity of spirit I think uniquely Bangladeshi.

I will treasure the memory of the kindness and grace of the people of Bangladesh. I depart with a heart filled with gratitude for the opportunity to be such a privileged guest in this extraordinary country.

I have a favor to ask. When Ambassador Haas arrives, please show him the same warmth and support you so kindly extended to me and my family.”
