Off The Road

I think we are lost, the GPS can't read where we are anymore... Rose said to her daughter, Jenny.

But you said you know where the camp is at, mum... Jenny replied with fear.

Rose got down from the car, turned on the Internet to check the online GPS if it would be different but nothing came up. They had gotten to a no signal area and it was so quiet and bushy, even Rose was scared of the next thing that would happen.

They had been invited to a company fire camping weekend and Jenny had always wished to attend one until the opportunity came to her mum. Dad couldn't go with them as he was busy at work. Rose decided to call her husband if the signal would let her, she dialed his number with hope.

Jenny felt more scared looking at her clueless mum as she continued to find signal in a bushy road path. It was getting dark and Rose had planned that they will get to the camp area early enough before time.

Since there was no way out, the mother and daughter decided to stay safe inside the car. They used the wears they had brought along to cover up against the cold. Rose had driven a bit further to a place she thought was safer before falling asleep.

Jenny woke up a bit too early to see the dark road and her mother sleeping soundly. She thought of doing a watch woman's work to keep them safe but a sound from the back of the car got her fidgeting with fear. She woke up her mother and asked her to drive further.

Just as they were about moving, their car broke down. One of the front wheels was loosen and they got stuck on the road feeling even more scared, the sound was gone but they couldn't move further.

Mum, what do we do? I think it may be a human eater that's trying to hunt us down... Jenny whispered to her mum causing more fear within them.

Let's not get too scared, it just might be because I refused to check the car yesterday... Rose tried to calm her daughter even though her heart was racing in fear.

I wish dad had come with us, I told you to beg him to come with us, now I wish I had stayed back with him... Jenny wasn't helping Rose think straight.

I think I have a plan, we leave the car here and lie quietly off the road until day breaks... Rose finally had a space to think.

What about mosquito bites, what if there are bears inside the bush? We might just be giving ourselves as sacrifice mum... Jenny made a point but Rose felt it was still best to do what she had suggested.

The two went down into the bush, lied down close to a huge tree not too far from their car. They made sure to stay quiet and before few minutes, they both fell asleep.

The next morning...

Rose opened her eyes to bright lights and a familiar face looking at her with a smile.

How are you feeling now? You passed out in the bush, did you get lost? Patricia said with a smile still on her face.

Patricia happened to be Rose's colleague who had told her about the camp. She found her friend by the way when she went on some treasure hunting, they had started the camp fun before Rose got there.

Where is Jenny? Rose asked after realising she had gotten to their destination.

She's playing with the other kids outside, she woke up first. You must have been so tired... Patricia replied.

Rose stood up and looked through the window, Jenny was playing like she didn't go through any scary situation the other night... Rose felt relieved.
