The Root of Bad Habits: Problem-Solving Gone Wrong
So the author started by stating the fact that every habit , no matter how good or bad it may seem to appear is a solution to a particular problem.
We tend to repeat a habit because we perceive it to actually be a solution to a problem or maybe to a reoccurring issue in our environment or state of emotion. But we tend to develop bad habits because we actually want an immediate solution to a problem instead of the one that will actually provide a long term benefits.
Let us take for instance , when we are bored , some people choose smoking and binge-eating as a quick solution. When we are bored , we tend to adopt endless scrolling in social media as the solution.
So what is the author trying to teach us in this chapter , first is to identify the habit , look for the problem it is solving and then look for a much healthier solution to it. So don't just try to resist the behavior but learn to address the need driving it.
