The Four Stages of Habit Formation and Breaking Bad Habits

Before we enter this part, let us take you back to maybe some chapters ago , if you remember vividly in the past chapters , the author talked about the four stage of habit loop which he termed cue, craving , Response , reward.

Well , in this chapter , the author told us how we can actually apply this in other to be able to break a bad habit.

Let me take you guys back a little.

1 . Cue: A sensory concept that triggers you to commit the act.

2 . Craving: This cue now creates an emotional or psychological desire within us that urges us to commit the act.

3 . Response: This is the response to the craving , we can call it the action itself.

4 . Reward: This is the positive outcome we get from performing the action , it then reinforces these behaviors.

So the essence is to eliminate bad habits by intercepting any of these cycles, you do these by making the behaviors unattractive. The most powerful cycle to actually intercept is the cue and craving because if we can actually get rid of these two , the response (action) and reward is less likely to occur.
