How to prepare a pumpkin for storage
Pumpkins intended for storage or use as fall decor should be allowed to cure. This process allows the pumpkin skin to harden and heal any scratches. Curing can be done in the field if the weather remains warm and dry. To do this, you need to wash and store for 7 to 14 days in ideal conditions - from 27 to 29 degrees and 80% humidity. If conditions are not favorable for field drying, carefully move the pumpkin to a dry, warm room.
Once the pumpkins have cured, they can be displayed, carved into decorations, or stored. Pumpkins can be stored for 10 or more weeks at temperatures of 10-16 degrees and humidity between 50 and 80%.
Pumpkin harvest and the first frost
The threat of frost is another common reason for harvesting pumpkins before the peak of their ripeness. Although pumpkins can survive a light frost, temperatures below -2 degrees spoil the pumpkin and cause it to rot.
