Late that night, someone knocked on the door of my grandma’s house. Guess who? It was my uncle, he broke out from jail on the same date he was arrested. He kept them all quiet, not to tell anyone, and told grandma that he will leave their place and shall return when everything is okay. Grandma was begging him to go back to the police and surrender not to let his case get worst because they don’t have money to counter Mr. David. He told grandma to calm down, he just wanted to take a rest then he’ll leave the house in the morning.
Esa noche, tarde, alguien llamó a la puerta de la casa de mi abuela. ¿Adivináis quién era? Era mi tío, que se fugó de la cárcel en la misma fecha en que fue detenido. Los mantuvo a todos callados, para que no se lo contaran a nadie, y le dijo a la abuela que se iría de su casa y que volvería cuando todo estuviera bien. La abuela le suplicaba que volviera a la policía y se rindiera para que su caso no empeorara porque no tenían dinero para contrarrestar al Sr. David. El le dijo a la abuela que se calmara, que solo queria descansar y que saldria de casa por la manana.
Early in the morning, three policemen came into their house to search for my uncle, they were very arrogant. They searched the entire house but no sign of Dino was found. The policeman told grandma that my uncle asked permission to just take a pee at the back of the police precinct. He was allowed and accompanied by a jail guard, but my uncle got a chance, when they were in the dark, he ran the fastest as he could. Far from our village was inhabited by some rebels, so, the policemen waited for the morning to search for him again, they were afraid they’ll encounter armed rebels at night.
Por la mañana temprano, tres policías entraron en su casa para buscar a mi tío, eran muy arrogantes. Registraron toda la casa pero no encontraron ni rastro de Dino. El policía le dijo a la abuela que mi tío había pedido permiso para hacer pis en la parte trasera de la comisaría. Se lo permitieron y le acompañó un guardia de la cárcel, pero mi tío tuvo la oportunidad, cuando estaban a oscuras, corrió lo más rápido que pudo. Lejos de nuestro pueblo vivían algunos rebeldes, así que los policías esperaron a la mañana para buscarlo de nuevo, temían encontrarse con rebeldes armados por la noche.
The policemen threatened grandma for obstruction of justice and that she would be included in her son’s case for not telling them of his whereabouts. Grandma was not saying a word but shaking and scared because she believes his son is still inside the house, she was wondering why the police did not find him.
Los policías amenazaron a la abuela con obstruir la justicia y con incluirla en el caso de su hijo por no decirles su paradero. La abuela no decía una palabra pero temblaba y estaba asustada porque cree que su hijo sigue dentro de la casa, se preguntaba por qué la policía no lo ha encontrado.
After they’ve searched every corner of the house, they warned grandma to let his son surrender or else both of them will be in prison and they left. After a few minutes of ensuring that the police vehicle is far enough, grandma checked the house and her son was still there hiding behind the rolled mat at the corner of their room. My uncle was standing still when grandma ask him, how they did not find him. He said, they’ve touched the mat and moved it not just once. “God is with you son, please surrender yourself everything will be okay,” grandma said. I don’t surrender mother, I’m not a culprit, not a thief, God knows I'm no criminal.
Después de registrar cada rincón de la casa, advirtieron a la abuela que dejara que su hijo se entregara o ambos irían a la cárcel y se marcharon. Después de unos minutos de asegurarse de que el vehículo de la policía estaba lo suficientemente lejos, la abuela comprobó la casa y su hijo seguía allí escondido detrás de la alfombra enrollada en la esquina de su habitación. Mi tío estaba quieto cuando la abuela le preguntó cómo no lo habían encontrado. El dijo, han tocado la estera y la han movido ni una sola vez. "Dios esta contigo hijo, por favor ríndete todo estara bien", dijo la abuela. No me entrego madre, no soy un culpable, ni un ladrón, Dios sabe que no soy un criminal.
“This is my last day with you mother, just take care of yourself and my siblings, I don’t know how long until I return,” he said.
My uncle finally left the village the next evening, no one knows where he was heading. The next morning, someone from the neighborhood said they saw him in the disco last night. Grandma was worried that her son already left or been captured by the authorities, but someone confirmed that he was not in police custody. He was seen in a disco on the same night he left.
"Este es mi ultimo dia contigo madre, solo cuidate y cuida a mis hermanos, no se cuanto tiempo pasara hasta que regrese", dijo.
A la noche siguiente, mi tío se marchó del pueblo, sin que nadie supiera adónde se dirigía. A la mañana siguiente, alguien del barrio dijo que lo había visto en la discoteca la noche anterior. A la abuela le preocupaba que su hijo ya se hubiera marchado o hubiera sido capturado por las autoridades, pero alguien confirmó que no estaba bajo custodia policial. Fue visto en una discoteca la misma noche que se fue.
Disco in a village is a yearly event in most of the Philippines’ countryside. It will be held once a week starting from a couple of weeks or months before the village or sitio fiesta celebration. It's a Filipino tradition, this event is facilitated by the political officials, letting the people in the village have fun. At the same time, anyone is allowed to sell food and drinks inside or outside the disco square.
La discoteca en un pueblo es un acontecimiento anual en la mayoría de las zonas rurales de Filipinas. Se celebra una vez a la semana desde un par de semanas o meses antes de la fiesta del pueblo o sitio. Se trata de una tradición filipina, facilitada por los funcionarios políticos, que permite a la gente del pueblo divertirse. Al mismo tiempo, se permite a cualquiera vender comida y bebida dentro o fuera de la plaza de la discoteca.
As a mother, she won’t stop worrying about her son, although he is already 17 years old, he can stand on his own feet. Thinking about his case, he might be declared missing by the police report while the truth is, he was murdered or tortured. They can do everything in their power.
Como madre, no deja de preocuparse por su hijo, aunque ya tiene 17 años y puede valerse por sí mismo. Pensando en su caso, puede que la policía lo declare desaparecido cuando la verdad es que fue asesinado o torturado. Pueden hacer todo lo que esté en su mano.
Days, weeks, and months have passed but no sign of Dino, not even his shadow showed up. After more than a year, Mr. David lost another two carabaos in just one night. That time, no more Dino was to blame for such incident. So, he blamed some of his relatives who took care of those animals for not guarding them properly. Mr. David was known for being arrogant to anyone even to his relatives, because he has the power to do so, he has the money.
Han pasado días, semanas y meses pero ni rastro de Dino, ni siquiera su sombra aparecía. Despues de mas de un año, el Sr. David perdio otros dos carabaos en una sola noche. Esa vez, ya no pudo culpar a Dino de tal incidente. Culpó a algunos de sus parientes que cuidaban de esos animales por no vigilarlos debidamente. El Sr. David era conocido por ser arrogante con cualquiera, incluso con sus familiares, porque tiene el poder para hacerlo, tiene el dinero.
Months after months, years after years they seemed to forget my uncle Dino already. His siblings already had their own families, my father then had his family and have us with my 5 other siblings.
Meses tras meses, años tras años parecían olvidar ya a mi tío Dino. Sus hermanos ya tenian sus propias familias, mi padre entonces tenia su familia y nos tenia a nosotros con mis otros 5 hermanos.
