My father never told the story until a certain Berto claimed Dino was alive.

Mi padre nunca contó la historia hasta que un tal Berto afirmó que Dino estaba vivo.

Back in 1969, my father’s younger brother Dino (my uncle) was accused of a crime he never did.

En 1969, Dino, el hermano pequeño de mi padre (mi tío), fue acusado de un delito que nunca cometió.

There was a couple in our village Mr. & Mrs. David who are well-known because of their standing in life, the people call them rich. They owned a large land area, most of it is sugarcane farms and some dairy animals. They had only one son named Etek who happened to be a close friend of my uncle. There was a time Etek asked my uncle to take good care of their carabao. Without thinking twice, he did it as a sign of respect for their friendship, my uncle helped him since they have more other animals to take care of. He wasn’t aware of what Etek was planning.

Había una pareja en nuestro pueblo, el Sr. y la Sra. David, muy conocidos por su posición en la vida, la gente los llama ricos. Poseían una gran extensión de tierra, la mayor parte de ella de caña de azúcar y algunos animales lecheros. Sólo tenían un hijo, Etek, que era muy amigo de mi tío. En cierta ocasión, Etek le pidió a mi tío que cuidara de su carabao. Sin pensárselo dos veces, lo hizo en señal de respeto por su amistad, mi tío le ayudó ya que tenían más animales de los que ocuparse. No era consciente de lo que Etek planeaba.

After taking care of the carabao for a couple of weeks, Etek instructed my uncle to look for a carabao buyer without telling anybody but just the two of them. He was surprised and curious why they would never tell anybody his parents would get angry. He was told to just shut his mouth and do it and be happy with his commission when the carabao is sold.

Después de cuidar del carabao durante un par de semanas, Etek dio instrucciones a mi tío para que buscara un comprador de carabaos sin decírselo a nadie más que a ellos dos. Estaba sorprendido y curioso porque no se lo dijeran a nadie, sus padres se enfadarían. Le dijeron que se callara la boca y lo hiciera y que se contentara con su comisión cuando se vendiera el carabao.

My uncle refused and never came back to his friend after that happened. He doesn’t want to be a thief just for the sake of money.

Mi tío se negó y nunca volvió con su amigo después de lo sucedido. No quiere ser un ladrón sólo por dinero.

After a couple of days, Mr. David invited my uncle to their house. Without hesitation, the innocent Dino went to their house as he greatly respects this family. There were some neighbors outside Mr. David’s house, he was just thinking there might be a small celebration or thanksgiving activity. Upon entering the house, policemen arrested him immediately, grabbed his arm, and handcuffed him. He struggled to get off from the policemen because he didn’t do anything wrong.

Al cabo de un par de días, el Sr. David invitó a mi tío a su casa. Sin dudarlo, el inocente Dino fue a su casa, ya que respeta mucho a esta familia. Había algunos vecinos fuera de la casa del Sr. David, él sólo pensaba que podría haber una pequeña celebración o actividad de acción de gracias. Al entrar en la casa, los policías le detuvieron inmediatamente, le agarraron del brazo y le esposaron. Luchó por zafarse de los policías porque no había hecho nada malo.

He was dragged outside the house in front of their neighbors. My uncle was just 17 years old at that time. He was so scared, crying and asking for help from the people that surrounds them. They called my grandmother, and as she came in at the scene Mr. David was very angry, arrogant, and violent. He punched my young innocent uncle on the face and everywhere repeatedly while being handcuffed, telling him as the culprit for the loss of his carabao. Grandma was there to stop Mr. David, asking for an explanation of what her son have done. She cried loudly, and hugged her son with lots of blood on his face, and mouth and some bruises on his arms. His shirt was covered with mud, blood mixed with his sweat and tears.

Lo arrastraron fuera de la casa delante de sus vecinos. Mi tío sólo tenía 17 años en aquel momento. Estaba muy asustado, lloraba y pedía ayuda a la gente que les rodeaba. Llamaron a mi abuela, y cuando ella llegó al lugar el Sr. David estaba muy enfadado, arrogante y violento. Golpeo a mi joven e inocente tio en la cara y en todas partes repetidamente mientras estaba esposado, diciendolo como culpable de la perdida de su carabao. La abuela estaba allí para detener al Sr. David, pidiéndole una explicación de lo que su hijo había hecho. Lloraba a mares y abrazaba a su hijo, que tenia la cara y la boca manchadas de sangre y algunos moratones en los brazos. Su camisa estaba cubierta de barro, sangre mezclada con su sudor y lágrimas.

That is what the money is capable of, Mr. David can do whatever he wants without being warned or stopped by the policemen. The mother’s love is priceless, they will do anything for the best of their children. My poor uncle explained to her that he didn’t do anything wrong, “I know son, we’ll just pray that everything will be okay” grandma replied.

Esto es de lo que es capaz el dinero, el Sr. David puede hacer lo que quiera sin ser advertido ni detenido por los policías. El amor de madre no tiene precio, harán lo que sea por el bien de sus hijos. Mi pobre tío le explicó que no había hecho nada malo, "lo sé hijo, rezaremos para que todo vaya bien" le contestó la abuela.

Policemen were getting ready to take my uncle to their vehicle and bring him to the police precinct. Before he gets into the vehicle, the last words he said to Mr. David was, “I’ll be back for my revenge”. Mr. David was laughing and told him who would take him out of jail. Grandma was just crying while her son was taken by the policemen.

Los policías se preparaban para subir a mi tío a su vehículo y llevarlo a comisaría. Antes de subir al vehículo, las últimas palabras que le dijo al Sr. David fueron: "Volveré para vengarme". El Sr. David se rió y le dijo que quién le sacaría de la cárcel. La abuela lloraba mientras los policias se llevaban a su hijo.
