Milk after brushing?

When parents came in with a children who are about 1-2 years presenting multiple holes in their mouth, I was often asked “ why this is happening? I make sure my child brushes everyday. “

Most of the time it turns out that the child brushes before he or she take a bottle of milk which put them to sleep. Parents sometimes missed the fact that all milk ( formulated/ fresh milk/ breast milk) contain a certain form of sugar.

Therefore, it is definitely not advisable to drink milk after brushing and fall asleep. Always have the milk, brushes then go to bed.

During the day, our saliva flows are more active and it will constantly help to flush away the sugar residual that stick on the teeth and also the composition of saliva will help to remineralised our tooth. However during the night, saliva flows are reduces which put the teeth at higher risk of decay.

In circumstances where brushing is impossible after feeding from a bottle, parents should consider to use a wet towel wiping away the residual of milk , in order to minimise the risk of decay.
