False Prophets And Their Crippling Effects on Africa

There are hundreds and thousands of religions vastly spread round the world and Christianity is one of the most practised among others. For ages, Christianity has been portrayed and built on love, forgiveness, selflessness, truthfulness and honesty. It’s significance cannot be overlooked because it has touched lives, and it’s belief has guided the values of people to success. However, in Africa, the ever rising surge of fake prophets is a cause for alarm. When I bring up such conversation between friends, they try to turn it down because a part of the commandments states that
”Thou shalt not judge” regardless of this fact, some matters need to be addressed. It is not a matter of judgement but more like an awakening from ignorance.

Most Africans pride religion over reality. Not just based on Christianity, other religions are included in this mess as well. It isn’t wrong to believe in your religion of your choice, but letting it cloud our minds and judgement from the reality of life is a disaster we must all avoid.
Based on religion it is believed that worlds of parrelel existence and realms which exists: the physical realm (visibleworld ) and the spiritual realm (invisible world) which are both controlled by forces. However it is believed that there are people who have the ability to access these forces both spiritual and physical, as middlemen between realms, possesses powers and possess knowledge on religious solutions. This is just like the prophets in the bible.

However Africans have come to believe deeply and solely in these religious servants, in hopes and belief that they can intercede in the issues of life which have been caused by forces. This keeps the church community growing, however falsehood has been introduced into this system which discredits the church at large. It has become a source to self enrichment, deceit and greed. These false prophets have been found to exploit Christian’s, subject them to inhuman activities all under the pretence of being servants of God, there has also been cases of abuse as well. Their main aim is to acquire funds, at the expense of innocent people, Through fake miracles and false prophesies, which gather crowds of the gullible, naive and the desperate. Fake miracles are performed and fake testimonies are given. People are being paid to put on acts of ailment who are then healed. This is just a strategy used in collecting money from members as people will be willing to pay any amount just to partake in the so called ‘miracle.’
Daily we read scary stories of what happens with the church all in pretence to gather funds.

A fake resurrection Sunday
Now this is a funny one lol. A ‘man of God’ brought the dead back to life after he was brought to the church in a coffin. The video went viral which Was widely mocked as it was obviously fake. It was used as memes for a while lol. He was in turn asked to resurrect the Great Nelson Mandela lol.

A pastor from South Africa asked his members to eat snakes and later instructed them eat their underwear’s and proceeded to ride on them like animals
There is no place in the bible where such inhuman treatment occurred, this is high level of ignorance. No blessing is going to come from such act.

My experience
During my year in high school, I spent a few weeks with an aunt. As a religious person, we always went to church and I saw this issue of fake prophets and prophesies play right before my eyes. The pastor kept asking the congregation for money, telling them that God would grant them their desires if they donated certain amounts to the church, from millions, to thousands to hundreds and people kept on giving. There is no where in the bible where it is stated that a miracle from God can be bought. I still witnessed where people were given special assignments to bring even larger amounts all in anticipation that their prayers would be answered. How absurd!!!

Flat Tummy Miracle
There was a viral clip of a pastor healing people of big stomach. Now how is this possible?? Having a big stomach isn’t even a disease. In a leaked video it showed that a worker stood behind the lady and deflated a balloon which was underneath the woman’s clothes. It is all acting!!

Healing by drinking Antiseptic
A pastor instructed his members to drink Dettol, an anticeptic used to kill germs or clean wounds, saying it was an instruction from God to serve as healing. Some say he instructed them to drink it a a cure covid19. Wether true or not, drinking disinfectant is harmful to the health and can kill.

My mom’s Personal experience
My mom was invited to a church by my aunt, and she honoured the invitation. On getting there, after the service they did some counselling together. While speaking the pastor, he instructed that she gave him her car as a seed to the lord, and requested for a sum of 500thousand naira, a bag of rice and all her problems would be gone. Doesn’t this look like extortion and daylight theft?

Pastors sleeping with female members as a miracle guarantee
There have been numerous incidents like this. All in promise of seeking miracles. A lady came out to speak up that her pastor was sleeping with her and other female members as instruction from God. And due to ignorance she obeyed. Religion shouldn’t cloud your mind from thinking smartly.

In churches just as these, members are compelled and obliged to contribute and donate funds to their pastors. Now, giving comes from the mind but in this case it is just simple and plain manipulation. It is so saddening how people are being deceived. False prophesies have also been responsible in destroying marriages and families as well. Most fake miracles are used as a means to gather crowds all in aims of getting rich off of these members. This all dishonours and discredits entire church at large, too bad.

A measure solution to this problem is by creating awareness to this gullibility. Christians are being preyed on by these false miracle workers, Who only see them as money bags. People need to read and understand the bible properly so they can sense when there is pretense or not. These false prophets only want one thing, -enriching themselves. Churches need to be undergo proper assessments before they are let to practice, to make sure they follow safety rules and prohibit scams. I am a Christian and I am not against Christianity. However this issue has to be curbed. People have to be educated, although members who are under this manipulative acts are bothe educated and non educated, I believe they need to be theologically educated. The account record of churches should also be audited. Hopefully the rate of gullibility of members are reduced, there is an eye awakening of victims and these predators are exposed and stopped.
