Lake Bosumtwi is a lake in central Ghana that is very unique. It really does not have any inlet or outlet and a very deep bottom. It is geographically similar to Crater Lake in Oregon. It is believed that it could have been created by a meteor impact.
It is also unique because traditionally it is taboo to use a dug out boat and paddles on this lake so the locals have come up with another design of boat to use while fishing on this lake. They use a solid plank of wood and sit on it and use dinner plates or plastic plates in their hands to propel themselves across the water.
Lake Bosumtwi is located about 45 minutes from Kumasi the second city of Ghana which is about 6 hours from Accra by road. There is one decent road that goes up and over the rim and into the one major town on the lakes edge Abono. Beyond this town there is a rough road that traverses the lakes edge part way around the lake in both directions.
There are a number of resorts and guest houses around the lakes edge. One of them is called The Green Ranch. It is owned by a French woman and a Ghanaian man. She has combined this beautiful space with her love for horses and has carved this little eco-resort/homestead out of the side of the mountain overlooking the lake.
A little visual perspective of where the lake is in Ghana.
The green mountains surround the glassy lake make for some very nice pictures and views.
When I visited a few years ago they had 9 horses and do short rides for customers and guests. On request they can do some longer rides around the lake that will take all day from sun rise to sunset with lunch in between. There are some very remote villages and nature on the far side of the lake, I am sure it is a very unique experience.
The structures of the ranch overlook the lower field so there are often views of the lake with healthy beautiful horse feeding in the foreground.
I love when the lake gets so glassy with the mundane skies you can hardly tell the difference between the sky and the lake.
The main structure on the ranch is a building with a second level terrace that overlooks everything, this is the restaurant and lounge with the kitchen behind.
Below that there are two rooms and a nice porch for relaxing on that still has a great view.
This is looking up at the house from below. There is a very natural feel using stones and surrounded by greenery.
You can imagine just how relaxing it is to sit up here on a quiet afternoon and enjoy the view and surroundings. Maybe even catch an afternoon nap.
They have 2 in-suite rooms. The bathroom and bedroom are all one room. Everything is done simply in broken tile and cement.
This room has a king sized bed and natural ventalization.
The other room has twin beds and a very similar setup they are basically mirror images of eachother with a little different decor.
A little further up the hill is the dormitory cabin and a yoga or relaxation platform up in the trees.
The dorm is a little more rustic but perfect for young travelers or travelers on a budget. It sports two bunk beds in a nice little space.
The wall outside is a shrine to the reggae legend Bob himself.
There is a little porch to relax on if it is a little crowded on the inside.
For day visitors and dorm guests there are composting toilets. Because of the use of sawdust in the toilet the smell is non existent and bugs do not mess with it. Over time it becomes nice dark soil for use on the property.
Next to the toilet are some very natural rock made outdoor showers.
The showers even come with a view.
For much of the day the horses have free reign over the property. There is an orphan monkey that has become friends with the horses and I think was rescued from a near by village and may have been injured.
The horses are getting suited up and ready for a ride. It is easy to keep them distracted with some fresh greens while putting on the tack on them. The first photo in the post was on our couple hour ride along the lake front. It is a great way to experience the area.
The food is natural and fresh. Just looking at the prices I can see how long ago this was. After our recent inflation these prices I am sure are much higher.
A reminder to the guest that they can relax on drinking out of plastic water bottles for once.
If you ever make it to Ghana I strongly recommend a visit to Lake Bosumtwi and the Green Ranch. If any of these pictures look familiar or come up in another search it is because I took them and also did the website for the hotel. One of my businesses does websites and digital marketing for hotels and we have worked with up to 300 hotels in Ghana, Togo and Benin.

Ghana my rival country and I love what I see online about them. Most especially on Facebook I see my Ghanian people always shooting their shot against my fellow nigerians like saying their musician, artist and the likes are better than nigerians.
Whatever it's one thing keep us together African as a nation
Well only our Jollof is better.
Anyway there are a lot of Nigerians living here so maybe you have to see for yourself sometime.
This issue of jollof again. I guess some day I will visit Ghana to experience thing's myself
