Another curation experiment

in blurt •  2 years ago

Hey Blurt! My last curation experiment yielded useful results, and helped me better understand how Blurt works. Want to help me again?

image.png

This one isn't concerned with the timing of curation. Rather, I want to know what effect votes have on each other.

Put another way: Are votes (and curation rewards) bigger when they're on popular content, as opposed to content that doesn't get many other votes?

To encourage engagement, I expend the majority of my votes on comments. This does seem to have an effect on curation rewards - voting on posts (especially popular ones) seems to be more lucrative. That's fine with me, because I think curation should be about the content, not about the financial considerations. But I still want to confirm this is the case, and find out how strong the effect is.

The experiment

This one's fairly simple.

Two comments. One with a lot of votes, including mine. The other with just my vote.

How much more will my vote be worth on the comment with a large payout?

How you can help:

  1. Vote on my comment (below). Give it all you've got! If you can only spare one vote, no problem, please place it on the comment (not the post).
  2. Check the current value of my 100% vote on that comment.
  3. Include that value in your own comment. That will help me track its progress over time.

image.png

In the above case, you would comment "67.225 BLURT". Your comment is timestamped, so I'll be able to get an idea at how the value of my vote changes over time.

After 2 or 3 days, I'll compare it to a similar comment made on another post, with only my own vote. (I'd post the second comment here, but some people might get confused about which one to vote on, so I'll do it elsewhere. This won't have any impact on the experiment, ie: confounding variables.)

I'll analyze the results and present them to the community in an upcoming post! Hopefully we get more useful information that helps us make informed choices on the Blurt blockchain.

image.png

Note: Comments and posts are treated the same on this blockchain. Rewards work the same, for example. One of the only differences is that comments can't be reBlurted. Otherwise they're basically identical. I mention this because if the experiment proves that voting on popular content increases the size of your vote (and your 50% cut as curator), it will apply to posts, not just comments. We're using comments for the experiment, but the findings will apply to posts as well. And since posts generally get a LOT more votes than comments do, the effect would be even greater.

Thank you!

Please vote on the comment below, to help us understand the effect votes have on other votes on that content!

So far, so good! Thanks for voting, and noting the current value.
I see 59.605 now, after 13 votes (including mk's large ones).
My control comment (on another post so it doesn't get voted on) is at 52.863, so it already appears we can say votes have an impact on other votes! I wonder how strong the effect is?

Oh this is good news. Does this prove that it is better to make comments and have more upvotes in there?

It proves it is better (in terms of your vote size and curation rewards) to vote on popular posts. Comments (and unpopular posts) don't get many other votes, minimizing the impact of yours. Most people feel it's better to curate based on the quality, originality, and usefulness of the content, rather than for financial reasons, but I think it's still useful to understand how things work so we can make informed decisions about voting.

Thanks for this conclusion. I will keep this in mind. Do you have other experiment?

446.38 is the value on Monday at 6pm. Let's grow it!

Thanks! We're tracking the value of my vote, not the total payout. Currently it is 59.811 BLURT : )
(Started at about 53, which is what the control vote is still at, so we've already confirmed votes increase the value of other votes on the same content. The only question is how much.)

How's BeBlurt treating you lately?

Blurt is an excellent interface, very friendly and fast. It is designed to work with communities, although it is missing some updates, it promises to be a very good one. I still don't use it on my phone, and in fact, I rarely use blurt outside of my desktop PC

I'm glad you're enjoying the BeBlurt front-end. I am planning to give it another try very soon. It sounds like the basic features are being added and fixed, making it possible to do almost all blockchain activities there.
Myself, I only have a desktop PC, no smart devices or even cellular phone at all. : )

You do not like them?

I have a friend who doesn't use anything, not even a computer because he says he prefers to talk to people face to face :)

Yeah, I don't like the cost, the billing issues that always need fixing, and how people get addicted and reliant on them. Some people can't function at all without it anymore. I think smart phones make people less smart! And when I was doing a lot of street activism in Vancouver, we learned not to carry a phone or ID, so if the cops harassed us it was easier to avoid them. After that I never used a cell phone. I think desktop computers provide a better experience (full sized screen, keyboard, mouse, etc).
I also don't have a bank account, something that is quite rare nowadays. I don't like banks or their currency. I like gold and silver coins better ;)
But these decisions come with drawbacks... like the loss of convenience. Everything is harder without a smart device because the world has become filled with them. And without a bank account, paying online is harder... but now we have crypto so hopefully more people and businesses begin to accept it for payments.

Probably, it is much more complicated not having a bank account or smartphone, for those of us who are already used to using these tools. Certainly, many live idiotized by completely depending on mobile, but as a tool, it can be very convenient.

On the other hand, in my experience as a foreigner living in Chile, it is absolutely necessary to have both; Through a bank account, they measure your ability to save and pay, and when traveling to other countries (as I did in December) I did not need to travel with cash, and I was able to make some purchases paying with a card from a bank that did not charge me the commission for purchases abroad.

All this will change later... and when that happens, governments will try to get a hand through laws that regulate the use of cryptocurrencies, as they have already been doing.

Chile is not the only country that requires everyone to have a bank account and smart phone! Even in Nigeria that is now the case. Here in Canada it has been that way for many years. So deciding to never have a smart phone or bank account has completely destroyed my life. I can't own a car, can't get a PayPal account, can't travel, can't get a credit card, can't rent a hotel room, can't operate a business, and so on. It also makes many other things much harder to do, more expensive, and more time-consuming. But I make the decision to do it anyway, because I know that smart phones destroy our privacy and invite us to be enslaved in a cashless economy, and I know that banks are evil. I choose to not participate in my own abuse and enslavement. I also find that people who use smart devices become addicted on them and reliant on them, and can't function properly without them. So I do things the hard way, but I think it's the right way. If everybody said no to banks and smart devices, they would become much less powerful and not required for daily life. Our acceptance of these tools of our enslavement does harm to all of us and to society. The banks are very close to announcing a completely new financial system, where no cash or privacy is allowed, and I have been fighting against this for 15 years.

Isn't the blurt value derived from the prize pool? So it means that all votes on the reward period makes an affect and it doesn't really matter how much votes you have on the post

I'm not sure what you are asking, sorry. Can you rephrase the question?
