Hace unas semanas, una gatita de aproximadamente 5 meses captó mi atención. Su persistente maullido desde una ventana de la casa de mi vecino, día y noche, no pasó desapercibido. Recordé que a principios de año, esta misma gatita había escapado, un vecino, la buscó afanosamente, mencionando que pertenecía a una inquilina extranjera que vivía en el segundo piso de su casa.
Los días pasaron y los maullidos se intensificaron, un claro indicio de que algo no estaba bien. Un animal no debería vivir confinado en una habitación sin compañía ni cuidados. Fue entonces cuando, conversando con mi hermana, vimos a la pequeña felina tratando de ingresar a nuestro hogar a través de la reja de la puerta. Sin dudarlo, la acogimos y alimentamos, notando su desconocimiento incluso hacia el pienso o pellet, no sabía comer.
Intenté comunicarme con el vecino en varias ocasiones sin éxito. Eventualmente, otros vecinos nos informaron de la triste realidad: la gatita había sido abandonada por su dueña, quien después de una discusión se fue, y las personas en el hogar no se ocupaban de ella, dejándola sin comida ni agua, probablemente esperando que muriera.
Frente a esta cruel situación, decidimos cuidarla nosotros mismos hasta encontrarle un hogar definitivo. Afortunadamente, la historia tuvo un final feliz cuando la familia de un compañero de trabajo de mi cuñado la adoptó, asegurándose de que recibiera el amor y cuidados que merece, convirtiéndose en su única mascota y siendo mimada constantemente.
La indiferencia y crueldad de la primera dueña de la gatita fue profundamente conmovedora. Aunque es posible que enfrentara sus propios desafíos, tener una mascota conlleva responsabilidades que no pueden ser ignoradas, especialmente cuando se es consciente de las propias limitaciones. Por otro lado, la actitud de mi vecino, al dejarla desprovista de los recursos básicos para su supervivencia, fue incluso más lamentable. Si hubiera tenido la consideración de comunicarse con nosotros, sabiendo de nuestro compromiso con el rescate y cuidado de animales, podríamos haber actuado mucho antes para ayudar. Aunque este vecino es parte de mi familia, nuestras visiones sobre el trato a los seres vivos difieren enormemente.
Además, su comportamiento ha cambiado significativamente después de su separación y el fallecimiento de mi tía, convirtiéndose su hogar en un lugar de fiestas, consumo de sustancias y alcohol. Entiendo que la situación puede ser complicada y que la anterior dueña de la gatita podría estar en circunstancias difíciles, pero eso no justifica el descuido hacia un ser viviente.
Este rescate no solo salvó una vida, sino que también reafirmó nuestra determinación en luchar contra el abandono y maltrato animal, brindando segundas oportunidades a quienes más lo necesitan. Bueno es algo que llevamos haciendo desde muchos años... Aunque en estos tiempos todo es más difícil 😣
A few weeks ago, a kitten of about 5 months caught my attention. Her persistent meowing from a window in my neighbor's house, day and night, did not go unnoticed. I remembered that earlier in the year, this same kitten had escaped, and a neighbor had searched for her earnestly, mentioning she belonged to a foreign tenant living on the second floor of his house.
Days passed and the meows intensified, a clear sign that something was not right. An animal should not live confined in a room without companionship or care. It was then, while talking with my sister, we saw the little feline trying to enter our home through the door's gate. Without hesitation, we welcomed and fed her, noticing she was even unfamiliar with dry food.
I tried to communicate with the neighbor on several occasions without success. Eventually, other neighbors informed us of the sad reality: the kitten had been abandoned by her owner, who, after an argument, left, and the people in the home did not take care of her, leaving her without food or water, probably hoping she would die.
Faced with this cruel situation, we decided to take care of her ourselves until we could find her a permanent home. Fortunately, the story had a happy ending when a colleague of my brother-in-law's family adopted her, ensuring she received the love and care she deserves, becoming their only pet and being constantly pampered.
The indifference and cruelty of the kitten's first owner were deeply moving. Although she may have faced her own challenges, having a pet entails responsibilities that cannot be ignored, especially when aware of one's own limitations. On the other hand, my neighbor's attitude, by leaving her devoid of basic resources for survival, was even more regrettable. If he had had the decency to communicate with us, knowing our commitment to rescuing and caring for animals, we could have intervened much sooner to help. Although this neighbor is part of my family, our views on how to treat living beings differ greatly.
Moreover, his behavior has changed significantly after his separation and my aunt's death, turning his home into a place of parties, substance use, and alcohol. I understand the situation may be complicated, and the kitten's previous owner might have been in difficult circumstances, but that does not justify neglecting a living being.
This rescue not only saved a life but also reaffirmed our determination to fight against animal abandonment and mistreatment, providing second chances to those who need them most. Well, it's something we've been doing for many years... Although these times everything is more difficult.
