Valladolid

As part of our tour we dropped in really briefly at Valladolid. We only stopped for a very short time and a lot of that was spent tasting tequila so I only got a few shots I wish I had got more as the central square especially with the San Servacio church over looking as it was so beautiful.

This cute town still emanates the ancient magic of it’s Mayan inhabitants. It’s often referred to as the Pearl of the Mayan Orient since it is located in the middle of the most important touristic cities in the peninsula: Merida and Cancún. It’s easy from there to get to the Mayan ruins and many of the cenotes, which are only a short drive away.

The streets are lined with colourful houses, cafes selling traditional Mayan foods and quaint shops.

The main thing here though seems to be tequila. I know it’s all over this region as they grow the fresh agave here and harvest it but I’ve never seen so many people selling it as this town. I think perhaps they know it’s a way to get tourists to buy since they have so many visitors from day trips do a quick stop over there. We ended up going into 2 places to sample and each place gave us about 15 flavoured samples as a total light weight I was drunk! Some of the bottles were up to £150 and above. They included flavours like coffee, vanilla, chocolate, honey and some even had scorpions in. It was kind of embarrassing leaving without buying though they are really hard core sales people out here!!!

Yes! So happy that you could go to a real Mexican town! It does have some touristic streak, but it is more real :)
There are many cenotes around, take a chance to explore, they are beautiful! And, there is one IN the very city of Valladolid.
If you can, visit the local market.
And, very close , just outside of the town there is a Tequila brewery and a little show to see how tequila is grown and made. Ta-dan. ta-da-tada dan dan :))))
The maya museum just two blocks from the central Cathedral is interesting too.
Ek Balam is worth to see, but give it a half day at least.

huge Hugs and keep posting your travel emotions!!!
