Successfully produced the first block on a 8GB VPS

I recently took advantage of Valentine’s Day sales to purchase two VPSs from CloudCone, replacing my $17/month Contabo VPS and saving about $6 per month. The total cost for both VPSs are $130 per year (45 + 85), averaging ~$11/month.

With 8GB RAM and a 960GB SSD, these VPSs are sufficient to run a Steem witness node—provided you download and unzip the snapshot simultaneously and use a Docker image for steemd instead of compiling from source.

This setup brings the operating cost of a Steem witness node down to just $7/month. Given that a top witness earns 10K STEEM per month, the breakeven price for profitability is as low as $0.0007 per STEEM.
