Dana White commented that Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) would increase viewership of the sport, and it's generally accepted that MMA will be coming to the games sooner than later.
The Olympics features a number of martial arts including karate and judo. Wrestling has been a part of the Olympics since it first began in ancient Greece. Martial arts include grappling, wrestling, karate and demonstration. MMA is a legitimate sport and martial art, so there is no question it would fit into the games. It is generally accepted that MMA is a "fighting sport" rather than a distinct martial art, and that makes sense. Each fighter chooses their style and the sport embraces a diversity of fighting methods, strikes and grapples.
According to MMA Facts, there are currently an estimated 300 million MMA fans worldwide, and the biggest growth in viewership is coming from Asia. If MMA is to continue to expand, an Olympic inclusion would be ideal. The sport is growing organically, and more and more fighters and leagues are starting around the world. Viewers in 165 countries worldwide are paying attention to the sport. I have personally seen MMA matches in several countires, and it's almost a universally relateable sport that's alot of fun.
As an MMA fan, I believe that MMA has a place in the Olympics, as it is a distinct form of athleticism and has a following. I agree with Dana that viewership will be increased and sponsorships will appear as the sport gains more traction.
MMA is popular in the USA

I wouldn't have thought of MMA as an Olympic sport but it makes so much sense - do you think Olympians should be "amateurs" like they have with boxing?
