Strikes and balls are essential components of baseball's pitching and hitting dynamics. A strike is a pitch that the batter swings at and misses, or that the umpire deems a legitimate strike based on its location within the strike zone—a designated area over home plate. Conversely, a ball is a pitch that the batter does not swing at and that the umpire deems outside the strike zone. The count of strikes and balls determines the outcome of each at-bat, with four balls resulting in a walk for the batter and three strikes resulting in an out.

Outs, meanwhile, are the primary objective for defensive teams in baseball. An out occurs when the batting team fails to advance a baserunner safely around the bases or when the batter accumulates three strikes. Defensive players can achieve outs through various means, including catching a batted ball before it touches the ground (a flyout), tagging a baserunner out, or forcing a baserunner out at a base.
