Power naps are extremely beneficial for our mental health. Whenever I am travelling short distances which would be ideally somewhere between 15 to 30 minutes then I prefer to take a power nap specially at afternoon times. Mornings and evening are not the time that I would want to take a power nap. Afternoon there is this little lethargic feeling after lunch and taking a short power nap kind of freshens me up. The ideal time for a power nap is between 10 to 20 minutes, because anything more then that is not considered to be a power nap, then it becomes a proper sleep routine.
Even when I am in office, after lunch I like to take this short 15 minutes nap, it freshens me up and when back to work it gives me energy and alertness. In the field of sports also this is promoted. It is believed that if they want to be on the top of their game then they may consider a power nap. Sometimes more then food the power naps are important, they kind of help in mental recovery. When we are feeling stressed or worked up, just keep everything aside for 15 minutes and take a short nap, when we wake up we will see that there will be more clarity and a better state of mind to deal with the situation.
If the sleep extends more than this time then it becomes a regular sleep and when we wake up we may really not feel the best, rather we may feel like we want to sleep more. I specially get some handover kind of feeling when my afternoon sleep time increases. In 15 to 20 minutes we do not get into deep sleep but yet the mind feels fresh. When we sleep longer we get a sleep inertia. Sleep is always healthy for the body and brain, each sleep pattern has it's own benefits.
At the same time anyone who sleeps excess is also not very healthy, then it means that there is some health issue.
A power nap is like a booster shot, you take it and you are up and running again into the game.
