The Nigeria Computer Society (NCS) hosted an International Conference in Port Harcourt themed “Technology Innovation For Smart Economy” ( #SmartEco2024 ) graced a convergence of technology experts, innovative enthusiasts, visionary professionals from the academia, government agencies and a host of others.
Beyond being an active registered member of the professional body, I was also invited to be a speaker for the Business, Youth and Entrepreneurship plenary session. My topic was on “Empowering Youth Through Digital Innovation; Transforming Agriculture for Smart Economy”.
In my presentation, I highlighted the immense agricultural potential of Benue State, known as the "Food Basket of the Nation," by drawing a powerful comparison with the Netherlands who are a global leader in agricultural innovation despite holding a similar land size like Benue State.
I emphasized how, like the Netherlands, Benue can leverage digital innovation to revolutionize its agricultural sector, particularly in yam production, which holds untapped export potential. I also stressed the importance of equipping our youth with the right digital tools and knowledge to drive this transformation. By embracing technologies such as precision farming, smart logistics, and data analytics, we can overcome challenges like post-harvest losses and poor market access, ultimately boosting our local and international agricultural presence. I recall referencing the innovative approach UNDP in Nigeria is doing via the University Pods, Benue Agro Innovation Hub.
The #SmartEco2024 International Conference also brought new connections to me. The likes of Mrs Uduakobong Ekanem (우두악), Hon Fenibo Fubara amongst others. A renewed connection with known colleagues & elders in the digital space like Samson Ajao, Andrew Abu, Mayowa Ajiboye PMD Pro, Emmanuel Gregory Essiet, Midong Camila Shekarau, Chidiebere Ugwuegbulam, NACOSSites & the list goes on.
Appreciation goes to the NCS National Body, the conference committee chair Prof Bukola Onashoga, the NCS Benue State Chapter for the encouragement and to my backbone Susan Sewuese Kershima Yateghtegh who unavoidably couldn’t attend this year’s conference but supported in every way possible.
The event ended with a dinner at the Rivers State Government House as I amongst others were opportuned to meet with His Excellency, Siminalayi Fubara, the executive governor of Rivers State.
Port Harcourt was a goal, see y’all UpNorth in Kano 2025.
