Visit to Atomium, Brussels, Belgium

in r2cornell •  last year

Hello everyone.
Last year with friends we travel a bit through Europe. We visited some places and cities in Germany and since we visited Belgium as well.
We were in Brussels and here we visited Atomium building.
Atomium building is landmark of Brussels and you can see it from distance. As you get closer you realize how tall and big it is.

Atomium building is 102 in height. It has nine spheres with 18 meters diameter of each sphere. The Atomium was built as the main pavilion and icon of the 1958 Brussels World's Fair (Expo 1958). (per wikipedia)

Around wikipedia there is forest and greenery. These are parks I assume. And view from the Atomium is very beautiful. You can see greenery on one side and site scape and buildings on other.

First look from close at Atomium building. Yet when you come under it it is even bigger.

There are 9 spheres.
They are big and reflective. You can see reflections surrounding in spheres.

This is entrance to the Atomium.

First sphere.

Stairs to the first sphere or first level. Even stair railing are similar to atom connections and to the Atomium building.

Here there are exhibitions and drawings about Atomium building and its construction.

To get to other parts of Atomium buildings you use stairs ( top sphere is accessible via elevator).

11.jpg

And to some parts entrance is not allowed ( as I remember these stairs were not allowed for use).

In one of the sphere there were light show. Lights colors and intensity were changing. Even moving stairs to this sphere were changing color.

One of different stairs.

In this sphere there were some exhibitions with digital screens.

It was about gardens in cities. Gardens on balconies.
Same video different language subtitle on each screen.

Steel frame of sphere.

And from here you can see Brussels and landscape around.
Beautiful view.

Greenery and city.

And back on the entrance.
I thought that that was end of the tour.
But there is fun part.
We go to the top sphere.

34.jpg

This is photo from the elevator while going up.
In 1958 this elevator was fastest elevator in Europe with speed of 5m/s.
You could feel the speed while going up.

37.jpg

And view from here are even more beautiful .
I think this is from more than 90 meters from ground. ( Atomium height is 102 meter)
Now you can see Brussels further away.

Interesting place for photos.

We had good time in Atomium.
It was worth visiting.
When in Brussels you should check it out if you have time.
