Tent Caterpillars

in r2cornell •  last year

Hello everyone.
In the past I used to see these webs on some plants or bushes. Later I found out it was web of caterpillars. I saw them on the web but I did not take any photos.

Around ten days ago I saw nest and caterpillars were in the nest. After some research I learned that they are called Tent Caterpillars.

Per Source "The larvae of several moth and butterfly species are referred to as tent caterpillars." Also regarding nest it says that "The eggs hatch in early spring at the same time as unfolding the leaf buds. Caterpillars are gregarious and construct silken tents which they use as a refuge during the early morning and evening hours. They leave their protective tent and feed during the day."

Their webs or nests are very interesting. It is just ball like web in the grass.
There were many of them.
It looks like it was time to leave the nest and feed.
